HERTZ REPORTS Q1 LOSS
Estero-based Hertz Global Holding posted a first-quarter net loss of $202 million, compared with a loss of $223 million during the same period last year. Total revenue for Q1 was 2.1 billion, an 8 percent increase over Q1 2017.

BBGI POSTS LOSS IN Q1
Naples-based Beasley Broadcast Group posted a first-quarter net loss of $3.2 million, compared with a $7.5 million profit in the same period last year. The net loss reflects the lower operating income during the period and a $0.8 million year-over-year increase in income taxes, as the company recorded a $0.4 million tax benefit in the year ago first quarter, which partially offset a $1.2 million year-over-year reduction in interest expense in the 2018 first quarter, according to a news release. Net revenue increased to $55.2 million in the first quarter of 2018, from $53.7 million in Q1 2017. 
 
 
 
 
UNITED WAY VITA PROGRAM BRINGS $6.5 MILLION IN TAX REFUNDS
The United Way of Lee, Hendry, Glades, and Okeechobee provided tax preparation services to nearly 4,800 low-to-moderate income households completely free of charge in Lee, Hendry, Glades, Okeechobee, and Charlotte Counties for the 2017 tax year. Refunds to those using the free service totaled approximately $6.5 million, a 15 percent increase over last year. United Way Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) is a free tax filing service that helps provide financial stability to working individuals and families making $66,000 or less. This year, 170 volunteers were trained and certified in partnership with the IRS this year and served at United Way Houses and various locations during the tax season. Appointments are still available to file a 2017 return at the Estero-San Carlos, LaBelle, and Lehigh United Way Houses. Those who prefer to file on their own can do so free of charge at MyFreeTaxes.com. The United Way will be recruiting volunteers to serve as tax preparers, greeters, and interpreters for the 2018 tax year over the next few months. ECHEVERRIA NAMED ASSOCIATE ART DIRECTOR FOR GULFSHORE LIFE, GULFSHORE BUSINESS
Felipe Echeverria has been named associate art director for Gulfshore Life and Gulfshore Business magazines. He will assist in the design and layout of the publications. Previously, Echeverria served as art director at his own advertising agency company, EB Estudio Creativo, which was based in his native Venezuela. He was responsible for overseeing the creative department, interacting directly with major corporate customers and gathering requirements for their graphics goals. He led social-media efforts on Facebook and Instagram, handling design, content creation and posting. Echeverria, born in Caracas, studied at the Instituto de Diseño de Valencia (Design Institute of Valencia) and earned a bachelor’s degree in graphic design.
 
 
 
 
DISTINGUISHED ENTREPRENEUR AWARDEES NAMED
The Florida Small Business Development Center (FSBDC) at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) announced the winners of the 2018 Distinguished Entrepreneur of Southwest Florida Awards at the annual awards dinner on May 3. This year's awardees were: Distinguished Entrepreneur of SW Florida, Scott Fischer, owner of Scott Fischer Enterprises; Innovator of the Year, Jeff Poirier of AXI International; and Advocate of the Year, Amanda Jaron, owner of A. JARON Fine Jewelry. An additional award presentation included the William O. BLUE ZONES PROJECT RECOGNIZES SWFL ORGANIZATIONS
Two Southwest Florida organizations earned special recognition during the third Blue Zones Project National Summit, held April 17 in Naples. NCH Healthcare System received the Workplace Well-Being Award for improving the overall well-being of their employees. NCH has experienced nearly a three-point jump in overall employee well-being, a 54 percent decrease in healthcare expenditures over six years and $27 million savings during a three-year period. Twenty percent of the employees participated in walking groups and more than 34 percent made a positive shift in their body mass index. Gulf Coast Charter Academy received the Healthy School Award for a 20 percent increase in healthy school lunch purchases, re-filling more than 35,000 plastic bottles to limit plastic products in landfills, and logging 26,000 miles walked by their students. For more information about the Blue Zones Project, visit For more information, visit bluezonesproject.com.
 
 
 
 
SCORE NAPLES TO HOST BUSINESS BUILDING EVENT
SCORE Naples will host “The Six Adventures in Business Building Part 1,” from 2:30-4:30 p.m. on May 15 at the Collier County Community Foundation. Presented by Jessica Macera of Business Dynamix and Stephen Minosky of Davis & Associates CPA's, the event will include information on idea formation and vetting. CHRISTIANSEN NAMED TOP PRODUCER BY IBA
Gulfshore Insurance client advisor Leroy Christiansen has been named a 2018 Top Producer by Insurance Business America (IBA) Magazine. The publication’s top producers list for 2018 is made up of 80 elite leading performers in the insurance industry. To be eligible for inclusion, nominees had to meet certain criteria including a book of business exceeding $750,000 in 2017. Christiansen joined Gulfshore Insurance in 2013 and services general construction and government contracting clients, delivering commercial property & casualty solutions as well as strategic risk management. He holds an associate in risk management designation in addition to the registered workers compensation specialist designation. Christiansen earned two bachelor’s degrees from Saint John’s University and currently sits on the board of directors for the Collier Building Industry Association.

HODGES TO HOST INFORMATIONAL SESSIONS ON PTA PROGRAM
Hodges University will offer informational sessions focusing on its physical therapist assistant (PTA) program. The sessions will be held from 5-6 p.m. on May 31, June 19 and July 24, in the Stock Building, Room 221, at its Naples campus. In addition to information about the PTA program, individuals will also learn about available scholarship opportunities. Students enrolled in Hodges’ PTA program must complete one year of prerequisites prior to entering the program. After a thorough evaluation process, eligible students will be notified by their advisor to participate in an interview process. Challenge grant nets $3 million for Neighborhood Health Clinic
Last fall, the Neighborhood Health Clinic received a $1.5 million challenge grant for 2018 from the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation. As a challenge grant, the clinic was responsible for raising $1.5 million in funds to receive the matching funds from the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation. The clinic completed the challenge within four months. The Neighborhood Health Clinic provided more than 10,000 patient visits with working, uninsured men and women in fiscal year 2017 and offers access to general medical practitioners, specialty clinics for complex and chronic conditions, and dentists.

Free networking event to benefit CCCR
A free networking event will be hosted by the CCCR Business 100, a group of philanthropic businesses that supports Collier Child Care Resources’ (CCCR) mission and programs. The event will be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on May 23 at the IBERIABANK branch located at 1905 Pine Ridge Road in Naples. There will be door prizes and a “Mystery Box” raffle. Proceeds from the raffle benefit CCCR and will go directly to its “Raise the Roof” campaign, which will help CCCR replace one of its Early Childhood Development Centers roofs, following Hurricane Irma damage. New SWFL organization earns grant from Golisano Foundation 
Best Buddies International has received a $300,000 grant from the Golisano Foundation to expand its work in Southwest Florida to serve more individuals with  intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Three local members will serve on the advisory board: Samantha Clark of Caring Transitions in Bonita Springs and Naples, Suzanne Tocci of Tortuga Preserve Elementary in Lehigh Acres and Jodi Suskind of Thrivent Financial in Fort Myers. With the Golisano Foundation’s support, Best Buddies was launched in Southwest Florida just a few months ago in October 2017. Florida Skin Center 5K returns Saturday
Florida Skin Center is hosting its third annual 5K for malignant melanoma under a new name, “Take Your Skin to a Better Place.” The fundraiser, which takes place on Saturday at JetBlue Park (11500 Fenway South Drive) in Fort Myers, is intended to generate awareness and research of, as well as a potential cure for the disease during Melanoma Awareness Month. Registration for walkers, joggers and runners begins at 7 a.m., with an 8 a.m. start and a 9 a.m. finish. The cost to participate is $35 from now through Friday or $50 on Saturday. All net proceeds from donations will go to the Skin Cancer Foundation. Tickets for the event can be found at Support.SkinCancer.org.
