Kenya Teen Challenge - Decade Celebration

This week in

Kenya 10 th Anniversary Video

As we move through 2018, this is a year of remembrances, from positives like the 60th Anniversary of Teen Challenge to the horror of the 1998 Al Qaeda bombings of US Embassies in Nairobi and Dar that killed 224 and injured over 5,000.

We visited Nairobi, Kenya to commemorate a truly significant event, the TC Kenya Decade Celebration, an explosion of God's love, prayer, and faithful outreach that has resulted not in death, but hundreds of graduates and thousands who have confessed faith in Jesus Christ with changed lives, homes and communities.

Chausiku was driven from his home at the age of 10. On the street, gangs tried to recruit him, but handicapped, unable to walk, he was abandoned by everyone. Scavenging on the street and robbing, he turned to drugs. From changaa, a home-brewed and deadly hallucinogenic beverage of corn liquor and formaldehyde, to bangi (marijuana) he eventually was lost in addiction to heroin.

Kenya Teen Challenge graduate and Evangelist Joseph Countryman found him on the street, beaten and bleeding from an attack by a violent mob. When Chausiku heard the gospel, he gave his life to Jesus Christ and came into Teen Challenge. What a blessing to pray with him at the altar. God set him free from drugs, touched and healed his legs and gave him a miracle. Now he can walk, run and play football.
More than that, he can walk in faith, run the race and PRAY! What a miracle!

In 1999 Don Wilkerson visited Kenya. In 2008, David Wilkerson, the founder of Teen Challenge, visited Nairobi, for a Renewing Your Passion for Christ conference. A tremendous anointing accompanied by a powerful spirit of reconciliation among Bantu, Luhya, Massai,  and many tribal leaders forever impacted the nation. In the Mathare slum, David Wilkerson saw the plight of addicts.

God strategically connected him with two amazing AGWM Missionaries John and Anne Martin who had a burden for Teen Challenge in Kenya. I also met and trained John and Anne in Swaziland in 2007. The rest, as they say, is miracles. John and Anne rented the first Teen Challenge building and miraculous growth followed. Though they have moved on and placed the leadership of  Teen Challenge Kenya in the hands of indigenous leadership, the ministry continues to grow.
The Celebration

Hundreds gathered at the new Teen Challenge Kiambu Men's facility for the Decade Celebration of Kenya Teen Challenge. From humble beginning with 3 men in a rented home in Ridgways, Teen Challenge Kenya has grown to a thriving complex of facilities in Kiambu, Nakuru, a Women's home, farm and vision for 2 additional programs Their choir ministers in schools and communities across the nation, and Joseph Countyman, a TC and Bible school graduate, works full time ministering on the street and with Teen Challenge men.

The new Kenya Teen Challenge Women's Center is thriving and the ladies hunger for God was compelling. The ladies were not only a part of the Decade Celebration and Spiritual Emphasis, but Cathy ministered to the ladies during the breakout session. As they prayed and embraced God's promise of freedom from shame & forgiveness, lives were truly touched. The ladies brought a special touch to the choir ministry and outreach at Nairobi Christian Center, flagship church of the Assemblies of God and General Superintendent Peter Njiri on Sunday morning.

It was wonderful to see the Holy Spirit move in the lives of the students there. It was especially exciting to see the students being softened by the love of Jesus. Young women like Aabirah, a young M-sl-m who moved from casual observer to experiencing a fresh touch of Jesus' love.

HOPE the

For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh,  for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses.  We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up

against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ
2 Corinthian 10:3-5
--for your merchants were the great men of the earth, because all the nations were deceived by your sorcery.
Revelation 18-23

In Revelation, as John looks to the end times, he hears the mighty voice crying out in verse one, “Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great! He prophetically speaks to the spiritual warfare of the last days as the nations are deceived by her “sorcery.” The word for “sorcery” in Greek, φαρμακεία, transliterated pharmakeia is the word from which we get the word pharmacy, literally enchantment with drugs.

Disagreement about the roots of addiction between, medical, psychological, and faith-based community is widely recognized. While we understand that addiction has social, educational, environmental and mental components … Its root is spiritual. There is a conflict in the heavenlies for the lives of over 300 million people trapped in the lie of addiction. The current opioid epidemic is not driven primarily by cultural or environmental forces, but by global spiritual warfare.

For this reason, it is critical during this time of fasting and prayer that we recognize God’s priority of  power and the ultimate victory in Jesus. The great commission stands on the foundation of Matthew 28:18,  “And Jesus  spoke to them, saying, ‘All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore’ …” While one benefit of successfully completing Teen Challenge is freedom from drugs, we are so much more than a “drug program” because real freedom goes far deeper than drugs.”  It is all about Christ-Centered life transformation.

David Wilkerson one time told me, “Those who are casual in spiritual warfare tend to become casualties of spiritual warfare.” Thank God today that we know the weapons of our warfare are NOT carnal but MIGHTY to the tearing down of strongholds – – including sorceries and addictions. Through God’s prophetic invitation… and now His prophetic mandate to Unleash the Hope, we can confidently say HOPE – the anti-drug.

  1. Father, never let us forget that all authority is yours and the miracles are in your presence..
  2. Jesus, you came to your disciples and said I’ve given all power and authority in your names. May we stand confidently on your promise
  3. One that God would give us a favor and strategies to reach into nations closed to traditional missionary efforts

Again I say
unto you,
That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done
for them of
my Father which is in heaven.

1) NAIROBI, Kenya:

Now, as the schedules return to normal and the"dust clears" after the amazing times of ministry, continue to pray for staff and students of Teen Challenge Kenya. Please pray for the follow up and fruit that remains after their Decade Celebration and Spiritual Emphasis week.

Pray for the nation of Kenya and the continuing political unrest. Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga, who boycotted the country's disputed election last year, has no sworn himself in as the "people's president" at a mock inauguration ceremony Tuesday in protest against President Uhuru Kenyatta. Thousands of opposition supporters gathered at Uhuru Park in central Nairobi, chanting slogans and waving tree branches at the symbolic "swearing-in" event, which was organized by Odinga's National Super Alliance. Please pray for a peaceful transition of power.

An entire generation has been contaminated by a culture of death. From entertainment to violent video games to television and the systematic removal of the value of human life from our schools, 17 innocent victims and their families as well as 24 wounded or injured, (several still in the hospital) need our prayers in this hour.

Aaron Feis, football coach who shielded students from the Florida shooter died as he lived. As lives were being taken, he gave his life. by putting himself second. He was selflessly shielding students from the shooter when he was shot.

Scott Beigel, a 35-year-old geography teacher and cross-country coach, was one of 17 people killed in the Valentine’s Day shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Just months ago he teased his fiancée, “Promise me if this ever happens to me, you will tell them the truth — tell them what a jerk I am, don’t talk about the hero stuff.” Some students said they took refuge in Beigel’s classroom when he unlocked his door for them as the gunman stalked the halls. The killer shot Beigel in the doorway before he could lock the door again.

As we pray for the families and friends of the victims of 17 families and 24 individuals wounded or injured, let us also remember teachers across our nation. They are heroes who serve our young people. Pray that God will touch their hearts with His love and truth.

3) Pray for TC centers around the world.

Some of our Teen Challenge family around the world in sensitive countries find themselves as the targets of government interference. Please pray for boldness and wisdom as they carry out God's command to "GO! and make disciples" and reach out to the lost, broken and addicted.

1) Please pray for K-land for the continued progress of The Living Free Seminar in a sensitive nation. Dave Batty did most of the teaching and John and Garo assisted.  Please pray that an effective Living Free program will begin.

2)  Please pray for Teen Challenge Ministry in Kansk.  There was a fire on January 19 in one of the programs, and two people died.  There is an investigation going on at this time, and it is a serious matter as authorities have a hostile attitude.  If convicted, the director may go to prison.  Please pray for God's mercy and favor.  Thanks!

4) A Bittersweet Homegoing

On February 9, Elizabeth Lane Palser, the dear mother of Libby Nance, wife of Dr. Jerry Nance, President and CEO of Global Teen Challenge, went to be with the Lord. In the words of her granddaughter, Kristi, "My Grandmother--poured into me. She took the time to--invest in each person God brought in her path." What a legacy and what a Kingdom Mandate.

May we remember her legacy by taking what God has given each of us and investing in those God has brought to us, in our families, our schools, churches, communities and our TC centers. Please pray for Libby, and the whole family as they grieve the loss of this wonderful woman of God.

5) Rev. Billy Graham--changes his address.

Dr Billy Graham was man mightily used by the Lord to proclaim God's love story around the world and tremendous partner to David Wilkerson & Teen Challenge. His message was simple, "Jesus loves you and has a better, eternal plan for you, if you accept Him as your personal Savior." A faithful husband, father and leader, he unashamedly preached the Good News to an estimated 215 million people in 185 countries. His reach, in prayer and counsel, extended to a dozen presidents as well as millions of people who watched him on TV or listened to him on the radio through his decades of ministry. A humble man who crossed the lines of denomination and race, he shared an uncompromising message of salvation through receiving the death and resurrection of Jesus as full payment for the penalty of sin.

In his own words "Someday you will hear or read that Billy Graham is dead. Don't you believe a word of it. I shall be more alive than I am now. I will have just changed my address. I will have gone into the presence of God."

Please pray for the family and the ministry that continues to proclaim God's love story to our lost and hurting world. The Bible tells us in Revelation 14:13: “Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord … that they may rest from their labors, and their works follow them.”

Pray with us for the global advance of the gospel. Pray for workers for the Harvest ...Teen Challenge Centers in 120 countries need staff and we currently have invitations to start Teen Challenge in over 32 new nations. They are crying out for help. They need the power of God to meet a pressing social need... but we know it has a SPIRITUAL ROOT.
MATTHEW 9: 37 Then He said to His disciples,
“The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.
38 Therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send
out workers into His harvest.”
