June 2019

Raleigh Scherer,
JBBA President

President's Corner

Hello JBBA members and families! I hope all is well as summer is in full effect and the 2019 JBBA National Show and Convention is a mere month away. The junior directors and JBBA Adult Committee Members have been putting in the work to make sure this nationals is one to remember. I am excited to announce that along with our newest Beefmaster Skillathon contest, we have also added a watermelon eating contest which will occur during the week of nationals! The winner will receive a prize, but more importantly earn the title of “melon eating champion”. All jokes aside, I would like to genuinely thank all of the raffle ticket buyers for supporting our newest fundraiser that will help cover a large portion of costs incurred at nationals. Thank you also to our 2019 sponsors for the continued support of our juniors. You are truly supporting the future of the Beefmaster family, which will carry on its great legacy. Be sure to check our social media for the latest news as we all prepare for our national show in Belton, Tx. See you all soon in the great heart of Texas!

JBBA Community Outreach
Let's Give Cancer the Boot!

Dawn Compton, Beefmaster breeder, sews shirts and mastectomy pillows for cancer patients. As a community service project during the national show, JBBA would like to ask exhibitors to donate a few items.

Dawn is looking for 1 1/4 yards of 44" or wider cotton fabric and bags of polyfill (preferably the 50 oz bag at Wal-Mart for $9). This amount of material will make approximately two mastectomy pillows or four lumpectomy pillows and pockets for several mastectomy shirts used following cancer patients’ surgery and during recovery.

Everyone is welcome to donate. Please help the JBBA with this community outreach endeavor! Look for the collection box during the upcoming JBBA National Convention to donate your items.

Thank you in advance for your consideration, support and help with this very special community service endeavor.
A Special Message From Your Director of Youth Programs,
Yvonne (Bonnie) Ramirez
Wow... Can you believe it? Our coveted National Show & Convention is only weeks away.

The past couple of months have been a whirlwind and they give new meaning to, 'time flies when you are having fun!" For many graduating seniors, they are preparing for their next chapter in life. Congratulations to all and best wishes as you embark on this new journey. Go do amazing things in this great big world of ours. Dream big! Find something you love so you'll never truly have to work a day in your life. Reach for the moon... Even if you miss, you'll still land among the stars and who can go wrong with landing on the stars!

A few big things that are happening in JBBA land: we initiated our first ever gun raffle and it has proved to be a big success. We have sold almost all 1,000 available tickets. It was a heck of a deal, $30 a ticket with 30 chances to win a gun and the possibility of winning more than once. I'd like to thank the youth for their efforts in pushing ticket sales as well as everyone who supported the cause and purchased tickets. We have a limited amount of tickets left so if you are interested in purchasing some, please contact me at the BBU office. It's not too late to get in on the raffle fun. Our very own Lance Bauer and Darrell Glaser were two of the lucky winners to date. How about those odds!

We are also working hard behind the scenes gearing up for Nationals and are beyond excited about some of the new and improved contests and social activities we have planned for everyone. I am pleased with the Junior board's work and efforts.

I encourage everyone to read the Nationals Packet and Rules and Guidelines in its entirety before heading to Belton. They are available at www.beefmasters.org. Please note that entries end July 1. No entries will be allowed after that date. We have a new video contest that awards participation points as well as points to the top placing winners that count towards the sought-after All Around award. I can't wait to see the creativity behind all the video submissions. Also new this year is points being awarded to the Photography contest. Photos are worth a thousand words and I'm just as excited to see all the awesome photos submitted. Let your imagination run wild, let those creative juices flow when submitting your entries. Don't forget the deadlines. Review each contest information and details to make sure your entries are eligible.

Everybody loves ice cream, right? I know I do! Well it so happens that the day we get to Nationals is National Ice Cream Day. So how could we pass up doing a little ice cream social to welcome everyone in honor of National Ice Cream day. I'm pleased to announce that Blue Bell will generously be donating ice cream for our "celebration." A huge shout out to our friends at Blue Bell for their donation.

There are still three scholarship programs that are accepting applications. I strongly encourage any eligible JBBA member to take full advantage of applying for these generous scholarships. See links below for more information.

I am pleased to introduce to you Miss Kaley Kelley, our JBBA/BBU summer intern. She started at the end of May and already has been a huge help with JBBA tasks. You all will get to meet her at Nationals. Read more about Kaley below.

Nationals will be a fun filled week of education, fellowship, friendly competition, and camaraderie. See you all down the "cattle trail" at our Beef in the Heart of Texas National Show & Convention. It's going to be one for the books.

I wish you MUCH.. Much learning, growth, greatness, happiness, dreams and goals!

Meet Kaley

My name is Kaley Kelley, I am Junior at Texas A&M University majoring in Animal Science. The cattle industry has been a huge part of my life because my family runs a commercial cow calf and club calf operation in south central Texas. I showed cattle at every major livestock show in Texas and after I had to hang up the halter, I had a passion in helping youth in the cattle industry. I am excited to be able to work with the youth of JBBA this summer! See you at Nationals.

The 2019 JBBA National Show & Convention is fast approaching. We have many sponsorship opportunities available. The annual event happens thanks to the generous and loyal support of JBBA friends.

If you are interested in being a sponsor or for more information, please contact any of the JBBA directors, officers or Bonnie at the BBU office. A Texas-sized "Thank you" goes out to all who have committed to being a sponsor of our coveted annual event. We couldn't do what we do without you.

A message from the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo: The oldest heifers in the Junior Beef Heifer Show will be calved January 1, 2018.
