Disaster Response Need

Recent heavy rains have resulted in considerable flooding in the Schuylkill County portion of this synod. Bishop Zeiser has been in touch with pastors in the Schuylkill Mission District who report that church buildings have been largely spared from damage. Many homes and businesses, however, have been severely damaged, in some cases more than once.

In response to requests for information about how to help, the following information is provided.

Initial needs have been addressed by various contractors and volunteer groups assisting with the demands of clean up. Residents are now struggling to make ends meet in day-to-day expenses and facing burdensome additional expenses just to maintain their households. The most beneficial way to assist these flood victims is to contribute to Schuylkill County Vision. This county-wide organization provides funding to those in need after all other resources have been expended. Funds are distributed throughout the county.

Various churches, organizations, and individuals are already contributing to Schuylkill County Vision. If you or your congregation are interested in helping in a way that will have long-term impact, please make checks payable to Schuylkill County Vision and mail them to the organization at 11 East Main Street, Schuylkill Haven, PA 17972. Please write “Long Term Flood Recovery” on the check’s memo line.

For further information, please contact the Rev. Barry Spatz, Jacob’s-Outwood Lutheran Parish, Pine Grove at pastorb10@verizon.nte or 570/345-8216.

Lay Eucharistic Visitor Training is a one-day training event. It runs from 9:00 AM to 4:00PM and is held at various locations throughout eastern Pennsylvania. The cost is $25 per person.

Pennsylvania Interfaith Energy Star Stewardship Tour

September 26 & 27

LAMPa has been working with interfaith partners and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in organizing and scheduling a Pennsylvania Interfaith Energy Star Stewardship Tour. The potential dollar and environmental savings are significant because like most U.S. commercial buildings, the typical worship facility wastes about 30 percent of the energy for which its congregants pay. The events closest to the NEPA synod are Harrisburg (Sept. 26) and Media (Sept. 27). For more information and to register, please visit the LAMPa website at https://www.lutheranadvocacypa.org/event/join-faith-leaders-for-the-energy-star-pennsylvania-stewardship-tour.
