Udugu Sunday - November 18, 2018
Udugu means "companionship" in Swahili. The word expresses equality, mutual support, and a commitment to walking together. In this spirit we will lift up our new sister church in Tanzania, and reflect on our stewardship through the ministry of Advent and the global Lutheran Church.

Worship | 9am & 11am in English, 12:30pm in Spanish

Get ready for Tanzanian-style worship! Spoiler: It includes a lot of Lutheran hymns. Tanzanian Lutherans are Lutherans, and sing from the same hymnal we do, translated into their own language, Swahili.

One unique element of Tanzanian worship we'll do is an offering of food for the community. Bring non-perishables with you to participate in this offering. In Tanzanian communities, this offering of actual food reflects the needs of the community. (Are we really so different, though, with our Food Pantry and Community Lunch?)

Pastor Margay Whitlock, an Advent member who happens to also be a pastor, will preach on her own experience in Tanzania.

Learn about our new Sister Congregation | 10-11am

Learn more about our new sister church in Tanzania from members of our Tanzania Committee. The presentation and discussion will take place downstairs, in the back half of the Community Hall.

Multicultural Thanksgiving Meal | 12pm

To close the day, join us for a multicultural Thanksgiving Meal with our whole community, including cuisine from Tanzania and El Salvador. Gathered around the table, we'll give thanks for diversity and celebrate that we are all one in Christ! Bring a Thanksgiving dish that represents your culture or tradition.
2019 Stewardship
We'll also take Udugu Sunday to reflect on our practice of stewardship through Advent and the broader Lutheran Church.

Stewardship pledges made this fall for 2019 are the basis of our 2019 budget, and therefore the scope and impact of our ministry next year. We ask that you begin the process of reflection about your stewardship through Advent in the coming weeks leading up to Udugu Sunday, November 18. Learn more about stewardship >

The following Sunday, November 25, our Council invites you a Budget Hearing, offered at 10am and 12pm, which is an opportunity to learn more and give input about the development of our 2019 Budget.
Advent Season Celebration - Saturday, December 8
10am-1pm - Activities | 1-2pm - Lunch | 2-3:30pm - Las Posadas

Mark your calendars for an epic day of Advent season celebration with our community! We'll have a spectacular array of fun activity stations inside and outside during the morning, culminating in the Latino tradition of Las Posadas in the afternoon.

Morning Activities | From community tree decorating, a holiday traditions share-board, and music on the steps outside . . . to kids' crafts, a winter photo booth, gifs & ornament sale, and more inside, we'll have a spectacular array of fun activity stations to explore.

Las Posadas | This Latino tradition reenacts the story of Mary and Joseph searching for a place to say on Christmas Eve. "Las Posadas" literally means "The Inns." Join our Latino community in observing this important Advent season tradition in our sanctuary.

Staff Change | After many years serving as our financial secretary and bookkeeper, Linda Kelly is moving on from her position to do consulting work. We are incredibly grateful to Linda for sharing so much of her time and talents to support Advent's ministry. Linda and her family are members of Advent, so you'll still be seeing them around on Sundays.

Organ Returns | After a period of covering our organ to protect it from roof construction on the building next door, our organ will be back for good on Sunday, November 11!
Are you a saint?
Yes, you are! One important belief in Lutheran Christianity is that we are all at once both saint and sinner. None of is perfect -- but through God we each can have an incredible impact on the world and the people around us.

This Sunday, November 4, is All Saints Sunday. Please bring a photo of a saint in your life, someone who has positively impacted you or others, with you this Sunday to participate in a special moment in worship.
