and other leadership development opportunities of interest.
Jason T. Kabanuck
Jason T. Kabanuck is an alumnus of the National Teen Leadership Program. Jason first attended NTLP’s summer camp program in 2012. He heard about NTLP through his high school club, Friday Night Lights, where he worked to provide safe and fun activities for teens to do on the weekend. Jason said of his first time attending NTLP, “I loved what NTLP stood for, and how it pushed me to get out of my comfort zone and explore new activities and perspectives.” He loved his experience so much that he returned as a participant in 2013 and 2014.
During his time as a participant, Jason was continuously amazed by the leadership of the staff members, saying “Seeing the unity and comradery between the staff” is what encouraged him to continue with NTLP as a volunteer staff member. Jason has been a volunteer staff for NTLP since 2015, and has staffed camps every year in both Northern and Southern California. Jason says that as a staff member, he lives for the “AHA” moments that participants have when they finally connect to each other, “On Saturday, you finally see your group come together as one, and the friendship is unlocked. They’ve made new friends, the barriers have dropped.” His desire to continue to promote the message and teachings of NTLP led him to join the Alumni Committee in 2019.

Jason graduated from Sonoma State University in 2018 with a BA in Psychology and a minor in Spanish. Currently he is studying to become a veterinary technician at the Santa Rosa Junior College, with the goal of becoming a guide dog mobility instructor for Guide Dogs for the Blind. Jason says that NTLP has given him the skills to solve problems and make decisions while taking into consideration the needs of everyone on his team, skills that he uses in his professional and personal life.
We're Getting Excited for 2020!!!
Ashleigh Cook, an alumna from 2008, who was our former Operations Manager from 2017-2018 and our 2019 Camp Program Manager is now officially our 2020 Camp Program Manager. Camp dates are still to be determined so stay tuned!

Ash is an active member on the NTLP Advisory Board, juggles two jobs, and attends school. She has gone above and beyond the call of duty for NTLP. She never ceases to amaze us in how much she has devoted to making NTLP a success.

Highlights from 2019
  • January: The Board of Directors held their winter Board meeting and focused on strategic planning for 2019 and beyond. Lots of sticky notes and collaboration were involved.
  • February: Alumna Payton Shields hosted our our annual Heart-to-Heart party for alumni where we played board games and made Valentines for our alumni.
  • March: We collaborated with Jennifer Lopez, former Executive Director of NTLP and current Executive Director of CalPAL, for the California Police Activities League of the Youth Mentoring and Leadership Academy in Southern California. A small group of NTLP volunteers worked alongside A'ric Jackson of Generation Leadership to help nearly 200 teens learn leadership skills and improve their social and emotional learning skills. Bay Area NTLP Board Members also held a Dinner & Karaoke Fundraiser in San Francisco showing off their singing skills and raising over $10,000!
  • April: A small group of NTLP alumni volunteered in Oakland at a Native Nursery for Global Youth Leadership Day as well cleaning up Ocean Beach in San Francisco for Earth Day. In April, our Board Chairwoman also met Hilda Tolentino at a leadership conference and recruited her for our Advisory Board. Hilda brings a wealth of Business Development and Sales experience from her many roles and years at Hormel Foods.
  • May: NTLP participated in the annual Board Match event in San Francisco and recruited a new Advisory Board member, Katie McManus, a leadership coach, who later delivered a communications workshop at our summer leadership camp.
  • June: Alumni and staff got together for a retreat where we nurtured our leadership growth with NTLP, learning to mentor and lead in our personal lives. The activities prepared us for our summer 2019 leadership camp.
  • July: The Board of Directors held part 1 of their Q4 Fiscal Year Board Meeting in Sacramento, focusing on camp and Gala preparation.
  • August: Through the tireless efforts of Ashleigh Cook and JR Fujita, we returned to Sacramento State University in August to host 79 students from Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Texas, Michigan, New Jersey, Hawaii, Switzerland and Vietnam in addition to students from across Southern & Northern California. This year’s camp had all new motivational speakers and workshops, and an enhanced College, Career & Community fair, as well as a ROPES course facilitated by the continued support of the California National Guard. It was a smoothly run camp with many commending us on all the changes we had made.
  • October: Our collaborative event "Real Leadership Skills for Teens: Team Advocacy as Foundation for STEM - Solving the World's Problems Through Effective Emotional Intelligence" with the Organization of Chinese Americans, Sacramento Chapter, Intel and WIN (Women@Intel) was a success! We had about 65 teens in attendance and 35 volunteers from all three organizations, including NTLP.
  • September: With the help of all our community partners, friends, family, and alumni, we raised close to $22,000 at our Casino Night on Broadway Gala!!! You can check out photos here. Also, Crane Energy generously awarded NTLP with a $3,000 grant through their Crane Fund. A sincere thank you to Sofia Johnson, a parent of an NTLP participant, who graciously nominated us.
  • November: After our Board meeting up in Sacramento, we hosted our annual Friendsgiving with 16 people in attendance. It was a fun night sharing stories and expressing gratitude for our friendships and dedication to NTLP.
  • December: Giving Tuesday kicked off our End-of-Year Giving Campaign to raise $10,000 by December 31st. We have raised $2,700 towards our goal so far. You can still donate and support our mission.
