Water Collage - Summer Project
As you travel this summer, join in making our Water Collage.

Even as we spread out across the country and world this summer, we are still one community, united in Christ and in our baptism. If you're traveling this summer, you're invited to take part in this easy, fun way to connect with us.

Here's how:

1. Collect a small sample of water from somewhere you travel to this summer.

2. Then, bring it with you to worship at Advent on Sunday, September 16, where we'll do something special with our water from all over the world.
Hospitality Conversation this Sunday
10:10am | Sunday, June 24 | The Community Hall downstairs

Pastor Jim Sudbrock and Ellie Sudbrock are two of our most dedicated members to hospitality and welcome. This Sunday, they will be leading a conversation on hospitality, sharing their passion and their approach to making people feel welcome and comfortable when they visit Advent.

Making new people feel welcome is a responsibility we all share as a community and can all get better at. So take a step up in welcoming others and join us this Sunday!
Advocacy for Immigrant Families
We believe the separation of families at the border is antithetical to the Gospel and Jesus' clear call and example to love our neighbor.

Love does no harm to a neighbor. Love is the fulfillment of the law. - Romans 13:10

Here are 3 ways you can show love for our neighbors in Christ this week:

1. Tell your senators to stop Homeland Security from separating children from their parents at the border. Let ACLU connect you >

2. Support Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Services, who are on the ground now providing shelter, medical attention, counseling, and advocacy for children separated from their families. Give a gift >

3. Urge Congress to use the budget to keep families together and welcome the stranger. Send a letter through the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America advocacy portal >
IDNYC Popup at Advent
June 28 - July 19, Monday thru Friday | 9am-5pm | The corner office downstairs

We'll be hosting a 3-week IDNYC popup here at Advent, in one of the offices downstairs. Come get your IDNYC and help us spread the word!

IDNYC provides all New Yorkers a safe, free way to get a government-issued I.D. that gains them access to all the City services that come from having recognized identification, as well as benefits like a free one-year membership at many of the City's leading museums, zoos, concert halls, and botanical gardens.

To get your IDNYC, you need to bring some form of photo identification and proof of NYC residence. They accept a wide range of documents, including expired passports, and do not keep any of your information. Use their "Document Calculator" to figure out what to bring >
Acts: Reading & Conversation Series Beginning
Our first conversation is Sunday July 1 at 10:10am in the community hall downstairs! Take part in our complete reading of the book of Acts this summer, and weekly conversations at Advent on Sunday mornings at 10:10am.

Whether you're in town or away for the summer, you can read along with us!  The reading guide begins this week - a week prior to our first study!

This week's reading: Acts chapters 1 & 2

Acts is about the movement of the Holy Spirit in unlikely places, through unlikely people. It describes events following the ascension of Jesus and the start of the Christian Church. By reading it together, we hope to gain a better sense of how the Holy Spirit is moving in our lives and community today.
4 Ways You Can Support Our Ministry this Summer
Our weekly offerings typically dip in the summer months, while many people in our congregation are away. However, we know steady income contributes to a better budget, stronger ministries and healthier church.

You can support our ministry from wherever you are during the summer in any of these four easy ways. You might be surprised by how quick and simple they are.

Serving with Pride
As we look forward to the 2018 NYC Pride March this Sunday, we want to share this article from Extraordinary Lutheran Ministries about 3 LGTBQIA+ leaders in the Lutheran Church who are serving with pride.  We wish all our LGBTQIA+ siblings a happy, meaningful and justice-making Pride!

Once again, there will be a Lutheran presence in the Pride March this Sunday, June 24.

Our synod invites people to gather at 12 noon, on 17th Street, between 8th and 9th Ave. Pride organizers now require wristbands to enter the march area, so if you are interested in marching with the group, please contact Pastor Mark Erson, here.
Ministry Highlight: Sunday Singers
The primary voice in church music should always be that of the congregation - the gathered people of God. Yet choral singing is an important part of our tradition which provides an opportunity for the congregation to meditate on profound texts and music. Choral singing is also an enjoyable outlet that is the most popular adult organized leisure time activity in the United States. We are blest at Advent to have two opportunities for you to engage in this exciting activity: the Advent Chorale and the Sunday Singers. The Music Ministry at Advent exists to serve the whole congregation, and would not exist without everyone's generous stewardship. Thank you for your support of our worship - the center of our Christian life.

The Chorale rehearses each week and sings about 35 services a year.

In contrast, the Sunday Singers sings 1 service each month, twelve months a year, with only a brief rehearsal beforehand. It exists because we feel it is important to have an accessible and low-commitment outlet available to all (youth, adults, and seniors) who wish to raise their voice. I draw on my background as a music educator and voice teacher to help everyone participate effectively, regardless of prior experience or perceived talent.

Know, as we invite you to join us this coming June 24, July 15, and August 19th, that all are truly welcome! I would love to have you join in this joyful experience.

- Frank Martignetti, Director of Music
