Finding Abundance Together at Rally Day

We're told in the Bible that God will not only give us our daily bread, but make our cups overflow with abundant joy and blessing. Why doesn't it always feel that way? In a culture that urges us to jam-pack more productivity into our work hours, more accomplishments into our résumé, more friends and activities into our free time, and more stuff into our wish list, the feeling of lacking can persistently gnaw at day-to-day life. How can we more vibrantly experience the abundance God provides, and stress less about the scarcity our culture highlights?

We'll dive deeper into this question in the next four weeks of e-letters as we anticipate an exciting day at Advent just over a month away . . .

Rally Day will kick off fall at Advent with a BIG party from 10-11am in the basement fellowship hall on Sunday, September 18. This party will be bustling with activities for both children and adults that explore the theme of abundance in our world, our congregation, and our own lives. It will easily be one of the most fun Sundays of the year. Rally Day is a special once-a-year event that reunites and recharges our community each fall, making September 18 an important Sunday to be at Advent.

Please join us Sunday, September 18 for Rally Day! Come engage in the abundance of our community, and explore activities that reveal the exceedingly abundant lives we are blessed to live out.

The Abundance Photo Challenge

Join this fun activity to help us all get in touch with the abundance in our life (and each others') before Rally Day. Throughout the next five weeks we invite you to share pictures that capture the abundance in your life on Facebook or Instagram, tagging @adventnyc and #rallyday2016

Here are few guidelines to help you along:
  • Pictures could be of nature, food, books, people, activities--whatever you consider abundant in the world or in your life.
  • Keep looking harder for more new forms of abundance you didn't notice before.
  • Consider how the abundance in your life is similar and connected to people living in different circumstances than you.
  • Challenge yourself to visually capture forms of abundance that are less tangible.
  • Be creative, and have fun with it!
We look forward to seeing your "abundance" pictures! Have a friend you know would enjoy getting in touch with abundance these next several weeks? Invite them to join the challenge!

More Opportunities for You

Come a little early to help set up for worship this fall, and you're really helping make worship possible for everyone. Here is a way to contribute to the worship life of our congregation in a simple, peaceful way. On Altar Guild, all you do is setup our altar for worship on the occasional Sunday. Our Altar Guild members love doing it because they can contribute to worship behind-the-scenes and provide themselves with the opportunity for quiet reflection in our sanctuary. They need a few more members and would really benefit from you joining. Come learn how easy and rewarding it is by meeting with a member before committing to join. Click here to set up a meeting and learn how Altar Guild works.

Give blood at this Sunday's Blood Drive. Your blood can be life-giving for a New Yorker in need of serious medical treatment. Stop by our Blood Drive conducted by the New York Blood Center this Sunday, August 21 between 8:30am to 1pm.

Serve our neighbors a hot meal at Community Lunch. Our Community Lunch in August is especially in need of volunteers as many of its "regulars" are away on vacation. Could you help serve a hot meal to 150 of our neighbors on Saturday, August 27? Learn more and sign up here.
