Our new Sunday School Coordinator, Zachary Stevens-Walter, and I are very excited to share with you and all Advent's families, the theme for this September's "Rally Day." Our theme is . . .

Now, before I talk more about abundance, maybe some of you are wondering: What is "Rally Day" anyway? Well, the word "rally" means "to draw or call together for a common purpose" or "a renewal of energy in joint action." That's why many Lutheran congregations use the term Rally Day to describe a special Sunday when the congregation reunites after everyone's summer breaks to reengage in community and ministry. And now we are calling you!

Our Rally Day is Sunday, September 18 here at Advent. From 10-11am we're going to have a BIG celebration featuring a plethora of games, activities, and opportunities for children, youth, and adults that center on the theme of abundance.

To help everyone get ready for this big day, we're going share a simple counting activity centering on the theme of abundance that you can do with your family at home. You'll get a new activity to try every week until Rally Day on September 18. The first activity is just below. I hope you'll enjoy trying these activities with your family over the following weeks, and that I'll see you on "Rally Day" Sunday, September 18!

Abundance Activity #1

Count all the things in one day that give you life and energy.

Optional follow-up question: Do you know where each thing comes from? Where?

Hint to help your children get started: This could include breaths (air), water, milk, other drinks, any food items, vitamins, medicine, and more . . .
Want to help with Rally Day or Sunday School this year?

We are currently looking for this year's Sunday School teachers, and who better to call on first than our awesome Sunday School parents? Would you consider supporting our Sunday School program this year by teaching a small learning group? Here are some of the details:
  • Your lesson plan and materials are provided for you each week. You get the lesson plan by email a few days ahead of time to review. A printed lesson plan and any materials you need will be waiting for you Sunday morning.
  • You can opt to teach one of four age groups: babies and toddlers, lower elementary, upper elementary, or teens.
  • You are paired with a teaching partner for your group. The two of you should lead together as much as possible, but also have the flexibility of having your partner cover the Sundays you can't make it.
  • There will be a training session for you during the regular Sunday School hour, 10-11am, on September 11 (the Sunday before Rally Day) to make sure you feel prepared to lead your group.

We also welcome any volunteers who'd like to help us plan and set up the festivities and activities for Rally Day on September 18.

If you're interested in being a Sunday School teacher this school year, or helping out with Rally Day, please send an email to Zachary at admin@adventnyc.org
