New District Mobile App
A big thanks to Dave Johnston, BUSD Director of Technology Services, and the IT department for their development of the new BUSD mobile app available for free on the Google Play Store and iTunes. The app has easy to use features that will help you stay in touch with us such as staff directories, nutrition services information. The integrated calendars allow you to add district events to your personal calendar in a quick click. Waiting at the doctor's office? Take a break from Facebook and browse our news page to learn about the good happening at BUSD schools. Scroll down to the section after my letter for more information on downloading our new mobile app.

2017-18 Budgeting Process Begins
Developing our district's budget is a six-month process beginning in January after the Governor releases the proposed budget for the fiscal year, which starts in July. At the January Board meeting, the Board of Trustees voted to approve our budget and LCAP timeline that is aligned with the state budget process. Our community's feedback is vital during this process to guide and shape the district to continue to meet our students' evolving needs. Built into the process are Board meetings, stakeholder surveys, public hearings, stakeholder meetings, and presentations. Please review the timeline and mark your calendars to participate in this process.

New Board Member Positions
During the December School Board meeting, the Board reorganizes by selecting its officers for the following calendar year. In 2017, Thelma Boac will be President, Hugo Jimenez will be Vice President, Khoa Nguyen will be Clerk, and David Cohen and Richard Claspill will continue to serve the district as Board Members. I will continue to serve in the role as Secretary to the Board. On behalf of our district, I would like to thank our distinguished Board of Trustees for their commitment to serving our community's schools.

School Achievement Plans
School level teams working with their Site Councils have developed the plans to improve the academic performance of all students. The 2016-2017 plans have been reviewed to assure that they are consistent with our Local Control Accountability Plan and that the expenditure of funds is aligned with the goals of the plan.

Rainy Day Drop Offs

Please be extra cautious while driving to and from school on rainy days. Drive slow and allow your family extra time to arrive at school on time.

TIP: Have your children keep their backpacks and rain gear in the back seat with them. When you reach the drop-off curb your children will be ready for a quick exit with minimal soaking and will not impede traffic flow.

Piedmont Middle School Receives $42,500 Grant
Four years ago, Piedmont Middle School applied for a grant for their multipurpose room floor from the Lowe's Charitable & Educational Foundation and never received a response. Thankfully, through Lowe's auditing process, we were contacted that Piedmont was awarded a grant of $42,500 and their notification to BUSD had slipped through the cracks!

Parent Review Opportunity for New Language Arts Program

The ELA/ELD Leadership Committee will be piloting English language arts and English language development programs beginning in January and ending in April 2017.  Materials are on display at the District Office. Parents may view the materials on display during normal business hours. Since the last adoption, the Common Core State Standards and the California English Language Development Standards were developed. The new standards call for an integrated approach to teaching English Language Development, meaning that language is taught throughout the day including during science, social studies, and math lessons. In addition, an interdisciplinary approach is recommended to help students make connections across the subjects and deepen their knowledge. A new adoption will give teachers resources for meeting the demands of the new standards.

Vinci Park Cleans Up
Students respond with innovative ideas when you ask them to solve a real world problem. BUSD teachers find ways to harness their innate curiosity and innovation in classroom lessons. Vinci Parks' 5th graders in Ms. Rout's class completed a two-week science lesson block on the hydrosphere that integrated science learning and language arts. First, students identified a topic in their Studies Weekly newspaper - oil spills. Students took notes using the two-column method and developed their own summaries of the material. In a team-building exercise, students applied their knowledge of oil properties, oil spills, and water to develop an effective method to clean up a real oil spill. The lesson block ended with a "gallery walk" that allows the students to share their method and reflect on their outcomes.
