Dear Friends,

As many of you know, a young man from Rumson-Fair Haven High School,  Pierce Jarck, a 16 year-old, took his life last week.  Many of our Teen Academy students (Grade 7-12) knew him and went to school with him.  As well, many of my students who did not know him were impacted by news of his death and suicide, unfortunately, became an all-too-real reality for my students.

They were deeply moved to do something constructive.  To that end, the older Teen Academy class wanted to memorialize him with a tribute on the front sign of the temple.  It is their way of saying to the family, 'We are with you in your sorrow.'

The younger students have organized a bake sale with all the proceeds going to the Teen Suicide Talkline in his memory.  The bake sale will be baked goods that the students have created themselves.  There will be a wide variety of baked good and hot chocolate available with each item at $1 - $1.50.  We ask that all of Beth Miriam attend the bake sale next Sunday, October 29 at 11 AM.  Please support this cause and our students who have responded to this tragedy by fixing the world in their own unique and beautiful way.

If you wish to make a contribution directly in honor of the Teen Academy students or in memory of  Pierce Jarck, you may do so by writing a check to MHA-NYC, 50 Broadway, 19th Floor, New York, NJ 10004.

May his memory be bound up in the bonds of life and may his memory be a blessing to all who knew him and to all whose lives he touched.

L'shalom

Rabbi Cy Stanway

A Thank You from the Las Vegas Police Department

Temple Beth Miriam made a donation to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department from the Tzedakah Fund in memory of those who were killed in Las Vegas last month.  The money will be used to support the families of the victims, help pay for the medical care for the survivor victims and help with the funeral expenses.  Below is the note Rabbi Stanway received from the LVPD in response.

The Sisterhood Rummage Sale is on November 5 and is the Sisterhood's biggest and best fundraiser.  Bring in your old clothes beginning on October 30 and join the Sisterhood for setup throughout the week.

You can bring your shoes and clothes and place them in the Social Hall.

And something new:  Our jewelry boutique made over $800 last year thanks to everyone participating in our “NEW IDEA”.  So, of course, we are doing this again!  Would each family kindly donate a piece of inexpensive costume jewelry - used or new - for our sale on November 5?

Donations of jewelry are minimal and this would help us fill the jewelry table in our Boutique.  Please call Vivian if you have any questions:  732-221-7574

Thank you so much!
