Remember in Prayer
There are 100 Asian ELCA congregations and ministries and about 22,000 Asian and Pacific Islander members. We give thanks for their ministries and for the work of The ELCA Association of Asian and Pacific Islanders, especially during Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.

Bishop Mjema from Pare Diocese Visits Iowa
Bishop Charles Mjema, Bishop of the Pare Diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT) met with Governor Terry Branstad and Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds on April 16th, 2015.

In their second visit to the United States, Bishop Mjema and his wife Pastor Nahana Mjema visited Iowa to further the companion relationship between the two ministries. The companion relationship, which has been active since 1988, has historically included joint ministry projects, cultural exchanges and visits, and partnerships between congregations in Iowa and parishes in Tanzania.

This trip to Iowa also included a celebration of companionship in Des Moines, worship in local congregations, the ordination of a new pastor, a visit to Wartburg Theological Seminary in Dubuque, and several meetings that highlighted the ministry of Lutherans in Iowa.
Bishop Mjema and Pastor Mjema were also part of a time of worship and celebration of the working partnership in Des Moines on April 18. Click here to learn more about our companion synod

Upcoming administration workshops
Administration and finance are important to the health of your congregation. Having a firm grasp on your congregation’s finances will have a positive impact on your local ministry; as well as the ministries that we do together as the ELCA. And understanding your congregation’s tax and reporting responsibilities will ensure that you remain in good standing as a non-profit corporation.

The Southeastern Iowa Synod is offering four workshops to help with administration and finance in your congregation. These workshops are provided at no cost to congregations of the Southeastern Iowa Synod.  Pre-registration is encouraged. See the full list of dates and times.

For questions, or to register contact Kathy Smith, Associate for Administration, smith@seiasynod.org, 319-338-1273.

Worship is the heart of all we do
By Bishop Elizabeth Eaton

There is a Seattle-based caffeinated beverage company that goes to great lengths to provide excellent customer service. Its campaign is to make itself everyone’s “Third Place.” “First Place” is home, “Second Place” is work and “Third Place” is the local coffeehouse. There is meticulous training for employees, relentless market research and creative adaptability employed by the company to retain customers.

Employees practice the “hand-off plane” where they are taught to make eye contact when handing over the vente mocha latte to the customer. This is so the customer will have a transformative experience while sipping a cup of joe. And it works. In a letter to thank the staff a woman wrote: “You are the hub of our week, the space of our regrouping,” and she went on to describe a multigenerational, multicultural, multi-socioeconomic community where she and her family found comfort and a sense of belonging.

This is our competition.  Continue reading...

ELCA partners begin large-scale emergency response in Nepal

Members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) are responding to an April 25 earthquake that shook Nepal and its capital city, Kathmandu. Sections of the city's historic center lay in rubble, as aftershocks continue to rock the city valley and neighboring countries.

News reports indicate that more than 3,000 people have died and thousands injured. The death toll is expected to rise as people are believed to be trapped under rubble. Deaths have been reported in neighboring Bangladesh, India and Tibet, and the tremor also set off an avalanche on Mount Everest.

As news about the catastrophe continues, ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth A. Eaton is requesting prayers "for people affected by the earthquake and its aftershocks, especially as they grieve the loss of loved ones and property." Read the rest...
