The Farm Dirt
Hours are 8-7 Today

The Fourth of July celebrates the signing of the

Declaration of Independence in 1776.

Revolutionary history began here in Massachusetts the year before in Lexington, Concord and on Bunker Hill.

Please enjoy this historical day with family, friends and neighbors, and honor the arc of history that has been the last exhilarating, tumultuous & continuously inspiring 242 years!

From everyone here at Bartlett's, Happy 4th of July!

Looking Back on 175 years of
Family Farming on Nantucket
A note from Dorothy Bartlett...

With the retirement of Pete Smith as Bartlett’s Head Greenhouse Grower this past week I have found myself reminiscing a lot.  A fateful trip, over 30 years ago, to purchase plants to supplement the farm’s greenhouse production, unexpectedly changed the course of our lives and that of many others. While shopping at a familiar greenhouse business off-Cape, I had the need for advice on growing and asked the young woman at retail if anyone could offer information.  She quickly directed me to another greenhouse where her husband was the grower, and he gave me valuable answers to my inquiries.  The same young woman, while checking me out, offered other information on savings, immediately perking my interest.   Subsequent conversations then and over the following few weeks led to their visit to Nantucket, interviews for both, and their employment for more than the next 3 decades at Bartlett’s.

Call it fate, call it luck...but whatever you call it, it was the beginning of a long relationship with Pete Smith and his wife Hilary Newell…and a lifetime of memories.

Hiring a full time grower was critical to the growth of Bartlett’s.  We are eternally grateful that we found Pete to lead and guide us.  He has not only excelled at his job,  he has become part of the fabric of Bartletts.  Conscientious, hardworking, knowledgeable-without-question, loyal, passionate… Superlatives are endless.  But with Pete's retirement and soon-to-follow departure from the island, perhaps the most important description for us is Friend!

We wish you a long and happy retirement, Pete.

The latch string will always be out for you.  Good luck, my friend!
