Synod News and Upcoming Events 
Assembly 2018 – Two Reminders for Those Attending

June 8-9

1. Please remember to bring to the synod assembly in Wilkes-Barre on June 8 and 9: (1) Jars of peanut butter and jelly for the Weinberg Food Pantry, and (2) supplies to assemble health kits for Lutheran Disaster Relief – bath towels and wash cloths, bars of soap, combs, toothbrushes, and nail clippers.

2. A new component of Synod Assembly is an opportunity to put our faith into practice. You will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of service projects during the plenary breaks on Friday. If you would like to register prior to Friday morning, please send your request to Pr. Michele Kaufman (kaufman19@verizon.net) by Wednesday, June 6th. A list of service projects can be found on the synod website.

Assembly 2018 – Workshop Update
ELCA Inter-religious Commitments: Review and Response

Friday, June 8, 11 am - 1 pm. The draft statement on inter-religious relations which will be revised for consideration at the 2019 ELCA Churchwide Assembly will be presented for discussion and response, led by the IJCU of Muhlenberg College.

Synod Office Hours – Correction

Beginning this week the synod office will be open Monday – Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. It will be closed on Fridays. These are not summer hours but will be in effect year-round. We apologize for any confusion in last week’s E-News post.

June 11. Urban Ministry Gathering. The Urban Ministry Cohort will be gathering again for conversation and support on Monday, June 11, 10:00 a.m. to noon at St. Matthew United, 425 Jefferson Ave, Scranton.

June 16. Speak to One Another of Psalms. The Association of Lutheran Church Musicians is sponsoring a workshop for parish musicians, pastors, and others interested in worship and worship planning on Saturday, June 16, 2018, from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm. The workshop will take place at Christ Lutheran Church, 1245 Hamilton Street, Allentown; it will explore the Psalms and their use in Christian worship. We will look at how the Psalms shape our worship and form us in faith, and consider ways to enliven the singing of Psalms for congregations and choirs. August 11. Ministry Fair. 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at The Lutheran Center (Lunch will be provided). Visit the Synod’s Resource Center to learn about ministries of the Northeastern PA Synod; share resources offered by synod teams; and attend mini-sessions (like Learning Ministries Day). There will also be an opportunity to share your congregation’s information/ministries at your own sharing table. A Children’s Corner will be provided. October 16-17. Parish Secretaries’ Seminar. This is a one and a half day ecumenical, educational, non-profit seminar designed to provide opportunities to strengthen work skills needed in the modern office, to network with other secretaries/administrators, and to grow spiritually. Originally started by the Northeastern and Southeastern Pennsylvania Synods of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, it has expanded in recent years. As a result, secretaries, administrative assistants and office support personnel from every denomination are welcome. November 6-8. Bishop’s Conference. Shawnee Inn. Theme: “Exposing the Idols: Reflection and Practice.” The Rev. Dr. Melinda Quivik will help us to face idols both inside and outside of the church. The plenary sessions will address sacramental and theological idols, societal idols, and individual idols (both personal and professional). The Wider Church 
Healing Communities Training
for Clergy And Congregations

June 23

9:00 AM—4:00 PM. Unitarian Universalist Church of the Lehigh Valley 424 Center Street, Bethlehem. Cost of Training: $40.00 per person, $105 for 3 from the same congregation; cost includes training materials. The Healing Communities model equips congregations to become a “Station of Hope” by providing training and support in building relationships of healing, redemption, and reconciliation with individuals and families impacted by the criminal justice system. Congregations are encouraged to send a group of at least three leaders/active members in order to effectively implement the model in their setting. Click here for more information and to register.

Camp Noah Volunteer Opportunity

August 6-10 in Aransas, TX

Volunteer requirements: (1) All Camp Noah volunteers must: be 16 or older, submit an application, pass a background check, and complete online training. (2) All volunteers are responsible for cost of transportation to and from camp plus evening meals. (3) The normal $225 per volunteer fee is being generously funded by Rebuild Texas. (The transportation cost may be partially subsidized by disaster funds from Texas. Other sources of partial aid for volunteers may be available based on financial need). (4) All volunteers must be available for a week beginning August 4th to allow time for travel, camp set-up and camp tear-down.

► John Houck (retired; revhouck@juno.com) had a cardiac episode which required two stents. He is now at home resting and feeling much better.

​​ Nancy Moore (Trinity, Lehighton; nlmoore91157@gmail.com) has been released to do limited driving and increased pastoral duties as NeuroVision Therapy continues.

► Sandy Richards, wife of Tom Richards (retired; masterpastor@verizon.net), is dealing with a variety of health issues.

► Dave Rowe (Jerusalem, Schuylkill Haven; pastorrowe@jerusalemlutheran.com) and his wife, Mary. Their grandson, Nathan, is being treated for infantile seizures.

Lois Seip, wife of Durrell Seip (retired; dseip81@gmail.com) is recovering at home following a hospitalization for ongoing degenerative vertebrae.

P/T Preschool Aide (3-27)

Trinity, Wernersville Preschool seeks an aide for their faith-based preschool for children ages 3 to 5 years of age. This position combines academic and custodial responsibilities. Sessions are 5 mornings a week plus Wednesday afternoons. Academic responsibilities, with supervision by the teacher, include preparing art activities, assisting children at learning centers, replenishing centers, and modeling proper classroom behaviors. Custodial responsibilities include daily vacuuming and sanitizing toys, dusting as needed, wiping tables and bathroom surfaces, replenishing consumable products (towels, napkins, cups, milk), assisting children in the bathroom, and simple first aid.
