June 19, 2017
Summer is special at Advent. As city life slows down a bit, there are more opportunities to really deepen community here at Advent.

Adults, families, friends, staff, and pastors will relax and play in the sun together at our annual weekend retreat at Koinonia in August. Our Wednesday-evening Summer Suppers program will intentionally foster connections and community between diverse groups within our congregation: English-speakers, Spanish-speakers, children, teens, and adults.

A group of Advent members will travel to El Salvador in July to accompany our sister church, Pueblo de Dios, in ministry and fellowship -- and they'll be sharing their daily experiences in their blog.

We're changing it up on Sunday mornings with a special series of adult conversations about social issues and possible advocacy actions (details below).

We invite you into community this summer. Whether it's by participating in one of these special programs, or connecting through our e-letters and social media, you are invited to be part of the growing sense of community here at Advent.
Summer Suppers Registration
Wonderfully diverse individuals, coming from many parts of the world and all walks of life, have found their way to Advent, where God is weaving together our unique passions and stories in amazing ways.

This is the reality of our new intergenerational, bilingual program, Summer Suppers. It calls young and old, English-speakers and Spanish-speakers to the same table to know each other better through dinner, worship, and Bible study.

Summer Suppers will be on Wednesday evenings from July 12 through August 16, is open to all ages, and will be in both English and Spanish. We invite you to register at this time! You can view the full schedule and register online on our website, or pick up a registration form on the back table in the sanctuary.

Annual Congregational Retreat this August
Everyone who attends our annual retreat at Koinonia leaves so glad that they went. Why? Because it gives them the opportunity to make friends and get closer to people in the congregation. Because a weekend in the beautiful landscape of Koinonia refreshes the city-worn soul. Because you experience God at work in the abundance of life in nature and in the community present.

Plus there's boats, goats, campfires, s'mores, hikes, early morning coffee, late-night board games, and all the other fun that comes with our weekend retreat at Koinonia's Retreat Center.

So consider joining us the weekend of August 4-6 this summer. We'd love to have you with us. Learn more about travel, costs, housing, programming, and registration on our website.

Summer Choir will sing on July 9, July 30, and August 13. All are welcome to join!
Equipo El Salvador Blog
This year’s El Salvador delegation will get a send-off in worship on Sunday, July 9 and travel July 18-25. You’re invited to share in the experience through their daily blog reflections, which will be shared through our e-letter and Facebook page. Be sure to check in as they tour El Salvador and visit our sister church in Calderitas.
In-Church Picnic
Our in-church picnic returns Sunday, July 16 after 11am worship in the basement fellowship hall. It will run 12:15 to 3pm and is open to everyone from all three services. Come enjoy hot dogs and hamburgers, fun and fellowship, games and prizes for all!

The picnic is being sponsored by the Adventurous Adventonians but we are looking for help in setting up and cleaning up! Talk to either one of the "two Kathys" to volunteer (Kathy Matson, katdotmat@gmail.com/Kathy Carpenter, kathc89@gmail.com).
Spanish Mass and Backyard Cookout
On Sunday, July 23, you're invited to join our Spanish worship service as it migrates outside to bask in the summer sun. Instead of at Advent, it will be held in the backyard of a nearby congregant, and followed by a cookout. This special outdoor worship service will begin at the regular Spanish worship time, 12:45pm, nearby Advent at the home of Dolores. For the address email Pastor Gary at pastormills@adventnyc.org.
A Persuasive Opportunity for Jane Austen Fans
For all you book fans our there, we'd like to put this on your radar so you can start reading now. On Sunday, July 23, the Adventurous Adventonians are hosting a discussion of Jane Austen's Persuasion and viewing of the 1995 classic film of same name. Participants are encouraged to bring a dish to share (Jane Austen-era foods especially desirable). If you have never read the book or haven't read it in a long time, now is the time to pick up a copy as the discussion will be more enjoyable for those familiar with the story.
