A Green Amendment to the New Jersey Constitution would ensure residents' right to clean air, clean water and a healthy environment.

New Jersey has some of the most advanced and comprehensive environmental regulations in the nation. However, the way they have been administered over the decades has protected polluters and failed to regulate inappropriate development, or limit widespread environmental degradation.

Our environment and the natural resources we enjoy and depend upon are in slow motion decline because in New Jersey we have no right to clean water, clean air and a healthy environment.

We can change that by amending the New Jersey Constitution to guarantee residents the legal right to clean water, clean air and a healthy environment!

The New Jersey Highlands Coalition is at the forefront of a growing movement supporting a Green Amendment for New Jersey.

Bills SCR134 and ACR259 propose a constitutional amendment for New Jersey, that would ensure that the right to clean water, clean air and a healthy environment would be protected as firmly as our other inalienable rights, like the right to free speech or private property rights.

In addition the provision identifies the State as trustee of public natural resources including the water, air, flora, fauna and the climate, with an obligation by government officials to conserve and maintain these resources for the benefit of present and future generations of New Jersey.

Currently, the legislation passed out of the Senate Environment Committee and has been introduced in the Assembly. With your support we can show legislators the value of a Green Amendment for New Jersey.

The New Jersey Highlands Coalition

We represent a diverse network of organizations - small and large, local, regional, statewide and national - and individuals with the common goal to protect, enhance and restore the New Jersey Highlands and to preserve the quality and quantity of drinking water both for the 850,000 people in the Highlands as well as the more than 6.2 million people in surrounding areas who depend on Highlands water.
