Dear friends,
We had another amazing Cruise Week at the Jewish Home Family! This week, our Gallen Day Center participants took us on a Mediterranean adventure. We began by visiting Morocco on Tuesday, enjoying a lively and interactive (!) performance by a belly dancer and followed by Happy Hour in Casablanca which included both mint and orange spiced tea. On Wednesday we headed to Greece. We began our visit to Greece with a fashion show featuring both cruise and "mythological" wear. It was a big hit ad was followed by a dance party and a visit from guest speaker Beverly Walsh who talked about Greece and brought some Greek artifacts to share. Later in the day we made laurel crowns and everyone looked very regal on their way home on the bus! Thursday brought us to one of our favorite places, Israel. We enjoyed a video tour and our own market bazaar. The highlight of the day was the "Captain's lunch" and the Dining Services team outdid themselves with an Israeli banquet. We closed the week with a "Captain's Sweet Sampler" featuring sweets and treats from the various ports we visited. We also took our formal cruise photos with backdrops featuring each of the stops along our journey. A great time was had by all! (More photos here)
At Jewish Home Assisted Living we began the week on Sunday with a discussion group on Israel led by Rabbi Korenblit. Memory Lane residents requested popcorn and a classic movie. Both things happened and they enjoyed munching while watching "An American in Paris." Monday began with a lecture on Annie Oakley, which turned into a very lively program and it was followed in the afternoon by a screening of "Annie Get Your Gun." On Tuesday, there were a number of morning activities including exercise but the most popular one was sitting on the back patio and enjoying the beautiful weather. We had folks reading, soaking up some sun and having some lively conversations. We also had Happy Hour outside and we had a big crowd enjoying snacks, beverages and fellowship. On Wednesday we were happy to see volunteer Joan Hess who hosted her "Something To Talk About" program. She always shares some good news stories and tidbits that folks love to hear. We also enjoyed exercise with Rafael and a big outing to Coco Nails. Thursday included a program on Gene Kelly as well as Tai Chi and we rounded out the week on Friday beginning with "Headlines with Beth" led by volunteer Beth Shiffman.
Jewish Home at Rockleigh residents enjoyed their Sunday Afternoon of Music featuring Cecilia Lee, a talented violinist who will be starting Juilliard this fall. On Monday our Kaplen 2 elders enjoyed balloon volleyball, Rubin elders had live music and the Seiden unit created its own rhythm band. Monday afternoon focused on Women's Equality Day and the Women's Club had a program entitled "Our Rights Matter" and talked about the Suffragette movement. On Tuesday we had a meeting of the Community Council followed by Table Topics and Tai Chi and in the afternoon we had our monthly birthday party, which is always a hit. Wednesday activities included Steady Boxing, Broadway tunes and music trivia. Elders on Rubin had a special program entitled "I Have a Dream" which focused on the anniversary of the March on Washington in 1963. We watched videos, shared memories and learned new facts. We actually learned that one of our elders had been at the March and she shared her memories and thoughts. Thursday featured another fun LaughActive session as well as Baker's Delight on the Kaplen 2 unit. This week's delicious treat was blueberry cake topped with whipped cream. On Friday we had a busy day with Dancercise, Men's Club, Bulletin Board trivia and music.
