Check-In

All new international students  on F-1 or J-1 visas are required to complete a mandatory U.S. government check-in. There are four steps to the immigration check-in process:

1) Complete the ISS Online Information Session. You must complete this required session before you register for classes. If you have already done it, great! If not, visit the ISS website as soon as possible to complete this step.

2)  Submit government-required contact information. This includes:
        - U.S. address in Seattle area
        - Home country address
        - U.S. phone number
You are required to update your local address on MyUW. If your first address is temporary – hotel, homestay, etc. – input that address into MyUW, and update your address again after you move into longer-term housing. It is very important that you format your address following U.S. address standards. Visit the ISS website for more instructions about updating your address.

3) Upload immigration document digital files.
Visit the ISS website for video tutorials on preparing your digital files and uploading them. There are separate instructional videos for F-1 and J-1 students.

You can also find on the ISS website details and samples of each document needed:

F-1 Students:
  • Page 1 of I-20 showing your signature
  • Passport biographical page with valid expiration dates
  • F-1 visa (Canadians exempt)
  • I-94 (after arrival, download electronic I-94 at www.cbp.gov/I94)

J-1 Exchange Visitors/Students:
  • Page 1 of DS-2019 showing your signature
  • Passport biographical page with valid expiration dates
  • J-1 visa (Canadians exempt)
  • I-94 (after arrival, download electronic I-94 at www.cbp.gov/I94)
  • J-1 Insurance Compliance Form (download and complete in advance)

4) Physically report to campus by checking in at your International Student Orientation Session.
ISS will review your updated contact information and immigration document files. You will be notified when you check in if there are any issues with any of your information. It is a good idea to bring the original paper immigration documents with you when you check in for backup. When you check in, you will also receive your new student arrival packet - including a full schedule of the orientation program, resources, and campus map.

Visit the ISS New Student page for important information and frequently asked questions about immigration and reporting to campus after you arrive in Seattle.

FIUTS Welcome Lounge

The FIUTS Welcome Lounge will be open Sept. 11-15 and Sept. 18 in the HUB Mural Lounge area on the second floor. The lounge will be open each day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

This is a great place to bring unanswered questions you have about FIUTS International Welcome Weeks, the UW, and Seattle. FIUTS facilitators and staff will be there, ready to welcome you and your family (parents and guardians from home and/or your American hosts) to campus.

In the Welcome Lounge, you can also learn more about and register for ticketed International Welcome Weeks events that require a fee and/or advanced registration: FIUTS Camp, International Trivia Night, Seattle Aquarium, and Boat Cruise. Check out the International Welcome Weeks schedule for details!

The Welcome Lounge will also feature representatives from several FIUTS sponsors with resources you may want to utilize, including housing, banking, and phone options.

What if I Arrive Early?

Early Fall Start New Students: Update your address and report to ISS at the mandatory international student orientation on August 20.

Autumn Quarter New Students: If you arrive on campus early, you should wait until your scheduled International Student Orientation Session to check in at the FIUTS Welcome Table. This includes transfer students inside the U.S.

Please let us know if you have any questions about the International Welcome Weeks program or check-in process.

See you soon!

Sincerely,
Amy Bergstrom
