Calling all Highlands Hikers,

A quick reminder about our July 6th outing at Ramapo Mountain State Forest. We'll cover about 5.3 miles of moderate hiking with the chance for great views of Ramapo Lake, waterfalls, and ruins.

Our itinerary:

We will meet at 10AM in the first Parking Lot on Skyline Drive.

(67 Skyline Dr, Oakland NJ, 07436)

  • Start on the blue blazed McEvoy Trail from parking lot, climbing gradually to Ramapo Lake where it joins a paved park road.
  • The trail leaves the road at a sharp bend, take the white blazed Castle Point Trail and begin a short, steep climb. At the top are some interesting ruins and outstanding views.

Bring snacks or a packed lunch to enjoy on the route!

  • The trail then descends, crosses a stream and turns uphill where it joins another park road and ends at Skyline Drive.
  • Take red blazed Cannonball Trail, then a quick right onto the yellow blazed Hoeferlin Trail. Follow trail until it reaches Skyline Dr again and catch the white blazed Todd Trail.
  • The Todd turns west into the woods and eventually joins a gravel camp road for a short distance, then turns south and reaches another outstanding overlook.
  • Continue on Todd, back to McEvoy. Left on MacEvoy back to the cars.

Highlands Hikers is an informal group lead by the NJ Highlands Coalition for people who love the New Jersey Highlands and the splendid opportunity it offers to get outside and experience nature.

Hikes will be scheduled on a rolling basis at different locations both well known and somewhat secret. We also anticipate inviting experts in ecology and local history to guide some of the walks to add to the experience of the Highlands.
