Staff Transition Update
As we look forward to identifying and welcoming a new Director for Evangelical Mission to the Southeastern Iowa Synod, it may be helpful to know:

  • The Director for Evangelical Mission (DEM) is a deployed position from the staff of the ELCA Churchwide Organization. Serving on the territory of the synod on behalf of the whole ELCA, the DEM is one more sign of the close relationship between congregations, the synod, and the churchwide organization.
  • The DEM works closely with, and is supervised by the synod bishop. In the Southeastern Iowa Synod, the DEM is considered an Assistant to the Bishop who has particular responsibilities that reflect shared churchwide priorities. Because the DEM is employed by the churchwide organization, this requires consistent and creative collaboration between this synod’s Office of the Bishop and the Congregational and Synodical Mission (CSM) unit, based at the Lutheran Center in Chicago.
  • For the current opening, our CSM partners will conduct a targeted search to fill the position. From an existing pool of candidates, they will work closely with Bishop Burk to interview and select a new DEM, hopefully in the near future.

Beginning Sunday, Feb. 7, and extending through the season of Lent, congregations across the ELCA will join together to raise $2 million to benefit the ministries of ELCA World Hunger. This support will enable crucial work to get underway and help us kick-start our year-of-emphasis.

Lutheran Day on the Hill: Host a letter Writing Event!

Not everyone can make it to Lutheran Day on the Hill (February 17th)--but think about the impact it would make if each of our participants showed up with a stack of letters from the people back home! With very little effort your congregation could gather 25-50 letters. When combined with the letters from other SEIA Synod congregations it will all add up to a significant witness on behalf of our brothers and sisters in need.

Host an in-person or virtual letter writing event.
You’ll find the resources you need here.
A fillable sample letter is available for you to use here.

Electronic copies of letters may be sent to LSIowa@LSIowa.org by February 15th. Hard copies can be delivered on the day of the event or mailed to LSI ahead of time. We would like to be able to present a copy of each letter to the leaders of the House and Senate, so please make 2 additional copies of your letters and bring them along with you to the event.

Together we can raise awareness about issues of poverty and justice in our state!
