Here to Serve: Being Church in the Time of COVID-19
Weekly Online Gathering for ELCA Leaders

Wednesdays, 1PM Central

You are invited to join this weekly gathering designed to provide encouragement and support for ELCA leaders across the church and throughout society. Participants will hear topical presentations related to how we are called to be Church in the time of COVID-19, as well as an opportunity to be in small group discussions with an ELCA group coach facilitating the conversation.

Join us on July 8 to hear from Indigenous theologian, Vance Blackfox, a citizen of the Cherokee Nation who has been committed to teaching ELCA leaders and members the importance of learning about Indigenous people and how to be in better relationship with "the oppressed of the oppressed." We will get to hear some of Vance's journey in the Church and what inspires and convicts him to work with non-Native people, white people in particular, to help us heal and to ready us to join the journey of Truth and Healing for the sake of Indigenous people on Turtle Island (what many of us call the United States).

Information Gathering Team Survey Results Now Available

Although not ideal, but still practical in a time of COVID-19, the Information Gathering Team supporting the election of the next NEPA Synod Bishop has recorded a presentation explaining the results of the in-person and online survey completed in February 2020. The team wanted to make results available.

Two key links are available (see the two buttons below).

  • The YouTube recording of the presentation, which lasts 54 1/2 minutes.
  • The presentation slides, which include clickable links to “deliverables” and “supporting materials” the team has prepared for viewers.

You are welcome to direct questions or suggestions to any member of the team; the chair of the team, George Freestone, is readily available at freestga@me.com to help address any requested follow up. The team will also consider options for future “interactive” sessions to further review and discuss these results and use them to develop preliminary questions for candidates for the role of Bishop for the NEPA Synod.

St. Andrew’s United Church of Cairo recently held a service in honor of Juneteenth (June 19), commemorating the end of slavery in the United States, and World Refugee Day (June 20), an international day to honor refugees. “[This] service is brought in great part through the efforts of our partner congregation pastors who are refugees themselves and leaders at St. Andrew’s,” the bulletin insert reads. The prayer of remembrance includes a reading of names of people who have lost their lives to “oppression, racism, violence and marginalization.”
