Boneh Olam Fiesta 2018

Dear friends,

We hope that your holidays are off to a good start.  Ours certainly are!  I had the privilege of attending services at Jewish Home Assisted Living and enjoyed, as always, spending the holiday with our residents.  We had a full house at Assisted Living and I know we had the same kind of turnout at the Jewish Home at Rockleigh.  When we join together for the holidays, it truly feels like we are part of a wonderful extended family and it feels like a perfect way to start our New Year.

Boneh Olam 2018

We also had memorial programs in all of our settings on 9/11 with a chance for residents and staff to gather and share memories and feelings. Each area had a different format but each program was a meaningful connection for all.

At the Jewish Home at Rockleigh we celebrated Grandparents Day on Sunday. We had music, games and reminiscence programs and in the afternoon our movie matinee was “Parenthood” with Steve Martin. On Thursday afternoon we had our monthly drumming circle, which is always a huge hit. We had many family members join us for holiday services and we hope to see that at Yom Kippur as well.

Jewish Home Assisted Living residents enjoyed a party for one of our resident’s 100th birthdays! It was a very festive event and included her receiving congratulatory letters from both the President and the Pope! Our Grandparents Day event featured entertainment by jazz/blues singer Janice Wiggins, who was back with us by popular demand. Wednesday’s Happy Hour featured Pina Coladas in celebration of National Assisted Living week and we ended the week with a visit from an ice cream truck with treats for both staff and residents.

In the Gallen Day Center, we also had a great week. We had some of our participants attend services on Monday and they were so grateful to have the opportunity to participate in Rosh Hashanah services. We also had a Monday afternoon conversation focused on Grandparent’s Day and the role and importance of grandparents. On Wednesday, participants took part in a creative exercise in journaling called “Journey to the Center of Yourself.” It was a perfect theme for the holidays and very appreciated by participants. Our reflexology volunteer was also on board Wednesday afternoon and that’s become a real highlight for folks. Thursday’s highlight was our September birthday celebration and we ended the week on Friday with the ever-popular spa day.

Our Israel Mission travelers are in “count down” mode with less than a month to go before we leave! Today we worked on our Mitzvah project, creating gifts that we will bring with us for our “Mitzvah of the Mission” visit to Kishorit, an organization we are looking forward to visiting. Don’t know Kishorit? You can check it out here:

This was a blog week for me and here is the link: As always, your feedback is welcome!

From all of us to all of you, best wishes for a year of health and happiness,

Shana Tovah,

Volunteer Opportunity of the Week

Come join our dynamic cadre of volunteers who participate in “Opening Minds Through Art” or “OMA”. This cutting edge therapeutic art program, originating from Miami University in Ohio, is designed specifically for our residents who suffer with dementia. No artistic skill is necessary. You will be guided step-by-step through an amazing abstract art project as you work one-on-one with one of our residents. The session begins the week of October 8th.
