Local is Lovely!
Over a year in the making, planning and scheming, our first Farm Fresh Rhode Island "Market Mobile" order has arrived! It took Maryjane, our Store Manager, many emails, phone calls and even a visit to Farm Fresh's headquarters in Pawtucket, Ri to plan out the logistics of getting a truck load of local and regional goods to Nantucket!  By golly, she's finally done it!
The catalyst for bringing these products to Nantucket was our desire to carry Maine-grown and milled flours, oats and grains from Maine Grains, a business based out of Skowhegan, Maine. Founder, Amber Lambke, originally from Brunswick, began to think critically about Maine-milled  rye, oats, and wheat when she got involved in the revitalization of Skowhegan’s downtown. As an avid baker, Amber helped to plan the annual Kneading Conference and Artisan Bread Fair, a series of speakers, presentations, and workshops geared toward reinvigorating a Maine tradition of grain production. “We realized central Maine wasn’t going to play a part in Maine’s rebirth of a grain economy if we didn’t have processing infrastructure,” Lambke recalls. Since opening, Maine Grains has continually expanded.
For the wider Skowhegan community, Maine Grains isn’t just a new employer, it’s an engine of transformation, helping to rehabilitate the town as the hub of growth in grain production for the area. The company’s grains have had a ripple effect, finding their way into everything from livestock feed to mushroom substrate (oat hulls or flour byproduct become a medium for growing fungi), and craft beer (Maine Grains’ raw wheat was recently used in Allagash’s Sixteen Counties). We are overjoyed to support Maine Grains and we hope you will too!
Be sure to check out all of the other regional, handmade food products that tagged along on the shipment, too!
The Strike is Over, but
We are Still Fresh and Full!

Nature's edibles are starting to arrive! Herbs like Basil, cilantro, thyme, & rosemary are still too tender for the outdoors but would be most happy in a window sill in the kitchen.

It's absolutely spectacular out in the Garden Center with new arrivals of spring tulips, hyacinths, azaleas, hydrangeas, lilies and more...
Natural Wine in the News
For those of you who already love our wine selection for its focus on small, family-run, organically farmed wineries, you will be delighted to know that we are expanding our selection of "natural" wines of impeccable quality.

Offering natural wines allows our customers to choose what they want or don't want to drink in their wines, just like buying cage-free eggs, small batch cheeses or organic spinach.  With organic and biodynamically farmed wines, synthetic pesticides and herbicides are of no concern, because they simply aren't used. Making natural wine takes the process one step further. Organic grapes, no stabilizers, only non commercial (native) yeasts for fermentation, no fining and little to no sulfur addition. Just grapes, yeast, and great wine-making. That's it! Read more here in the Washington Post about why natural wine is having a moment, when it's been around all along!
Who's Your Farmer? Get to Know our Staff

Paige Cascio, Assistant Garden Center Manager

Paige Cascio, originally from Guilford, Connecticut joined the farm in the early spring of 2018 as a Garden Center Supervisor.  When she was first introduced to the island, our cobblestone streets threw her for quite the loop, but once she was acclimated to those, the cherry blossoms won her over!  Paige graduated from University of Vermont  where she studied Sustainable Landscape Horticulture. It was only fitting that when she returned to the farm for 2019, she be promoted to Assistant Garden Center Manager.

When Paige is on the Farm, she loves being able to spend her day out in the Garden Center surrounded by flowers, meeting landscapers, and listening to the crashing waves nearby! Paige likes to use her free time to go ice skating, enjoys borrowing books from the Athenaeum, and catching sunsets at Steps Beach.

Fun fact about Paige. When she was seven, she discovered her green thumb and began growing and selling daffodils on the side of the road! Paige is a knowledgeable, cheerful and hard-working addition to the Garden Center team, and she has swiftly become Hilary’s right hand.  We are so excited to continue to see what the dream team in the GC comes up with next!
