Bedford 2020 Kicks Off Year Two of its Greenlight Award Competition at Four High Schools
Bedford 2020 is proud to announce the 2016-2017 Greenlight Award competition!
Local high school students are invited to come up with “big green ideas” to address climate change and protect natural resources – and to compete for cash prizes and the distinction of winning the Greenlight Award.
Expanding to 4 Schools
Bedford 2020 piloted the Greenlight Award competition last year at Bedford Central School District. Over 60 students participated, and the competition yielded an impressive array of projects. This year, Bedford 2020 is expanding the competition to four area schools: Fox Lane High School, The Harvey School, John Jay High School and Rippowam Cisqua School.

This Year's Theme: Solid Waste Reduction
Kick off meetings are underway at each of the four competing high schools at which Bedford 2020 is announcing this year's challenge -- addressing of Solid Waste Reduction. This could include ideas for increasing recycling, tackling composting, reusing, or reducing materials in the waste stream. Student projects may involve any variety of techniques or disciplines and might range from a design or invention, a new policy or technological solution, an awareness campaign to inspire action or behavior change, or any other project to ultimately reduce solid waste. Students might propose to pilot or launch their idea in any community: a school, a town, a neighborhood, a business district, a congregation. We can't wait to see what this year's competitors come up with!
Recycling is just one example where creative solutions could have a big impact to reduce solid waste.
