Young Adult in Global Mission to serve in Australia

Katie Linthicum from Urbandale will be serving as a Young Adult in Global Mission (YAGM) in Australia this year. She is a member at St. Stephen Lutheran Church in Urbandale. Katie graduated in May from Wartburg College in Waverly where she studied Social Work and Religion.

She says she decided to be a YAGM because she, “felt called to experience and contribute to the global church.” She notes, “I wanted to see what Lutheranism looks like in different contexts in order to better understand my own. Another reason is that I want to go to seminary to get an M. Div., but I wanted time after my undergrad to get to know myself and my call on a deeper level outside of the academic sphere.”

Katie will be serving in Salisbury, South Australia which is a suburb of Adelaide in southern Australia. She notes of the suburban context of Salisbury, “(it’s) kind of like Urbandale is to Des Moines, so it might feel like home!”

There are many ways to support Katie during her year of global mission. She requests prayers for “safe travels, for peace to calm my nerves and peace for the community that is welcoming me, and for an open heart and mind as I experience everything new and the way God is working in and through me and my community.”

Our common witness
By Bishop Elizabeth Eaton, this article originally appeared in the August issue of Living Lutheran
One of the distinct privileges of this call as presiding bishop is seeing the church at work at home and around the world. The Lutheran movement is alive and well, speaking the gospel in a distinctive voice. Sunday after Sunday the good news is proclaimed in accordance with Scripture and the Lutheran Confessions. In hundreds of languages and dialects, God’s promise of grace, reconciliation and freedom is received and celebrated in places Martin Luther never knew existed.
