Berryessa Art & Wine Festivals Grants Over $15,000 to Teachers

Berryessa students are so fortunate to have the dedicated support of the Berryessa Business Association. Through this past year's Berryessa Art & Wine Festival the association was able to make teacher and school grants totaling $15,349. The District is honored to receive such generous support for the grant recipients' innovative ideas and programs.
"We are investing in our community and the future of our next generation," said Frank Cancilla, President of the Berryessa Business Association.

The generous teacher grants funded the purchase of more musical instruments, arts education programming through the Youth Science Institute/Stern Academy, a field trip to San Juan Bautista, digital cameras, graphing calculators, and an ESL reading program.
San Jose Bridge Library Opens at Northwood Elementary
The District is proud to announce the opening of the San Jose Public Library system's latest "Bridge Library" at Northwood Elementary School.

A "Bridge Library" offers local residents of underserved neighborhoods access to library resources.
Through a partnership with City of San Jose, First 5 California, Health Trust, San Juan Bautista Family Resource Center, and the San Jose Public Library, this Mini Bridge Library provides books, library staff assistance, and resources using an existing Family Resource Center. The San Juan Bautista Family Mini Bridge Library has over 350 early literacy books! This valuable community resource connects the San Juan Bautista Family Resource Center with the full range of library services offered by San Jose Public Library branches.
      Trustee Professional Development
I recently had the opportunity to attend the CSBA Annual Education Conference with our Trustees to take advantage of the robust professional development opportunities and learn from our colleagues' best practices.
I enjoyed the timely information provided during the workshop sessions in various areas such as district financial planning, communication strategies, and LCAP implementation and accountability. The keynote speakers were also highly engaging as well as the opportunity to listen to the candidates for state superintendent of schools and governor.

The conference is California's premier event for continuing education integrating practical solutions for district governance that improve student learning and achievement. It was a wonderful opportunity for more learning and gathering resources for Berryessa.

      Dashboard Launch

California's Department of Education launched its California School Dashboard to help parents and community stakeholders find valuable information on school and student performance in an easy-to-understand format. The report includes test scores, graduation rates, and college and career readiness.

Please watch this short video to help you utilize this new tool.
Winter Break - A Time for Rest and Reflection

Within the Berryessa community, the holiday season stretches far beyond the boundaries of the 11 days that school is closed. Throughout the fall and leading into the spring, Berryessa families and students honor Eid al-Adha, Diwali, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, Winter Solstice, Christmas, Three Kings Day, and Lunar New Year. We are all fortunate to live in such a diverse and vibrant community where we can learn about each other's culture and traditions.

One tradition that I believe we can all hold in common is using the two weeks of Winter Break as a time of rest, reflection, and enjoying the company of family and friends. Remember to set aside time to appreciate the small joys of this season - quiet time reading, doing a puzzle or baking together with your children. San Jose and the Bay Area offer many opportunities to explore nature and cultural offerings. Taking time away from the daily routine is a great way to slow down and refuel for the New Year.

I would like to thank the Berryessa community for such a wonderful welcome as I complete my first four months as Superintendent. The past months have been exhilarating and inspiring. I am thrilled to be in a District filled with curious learners, supportive families, and engaged staff.

Wishing everyone a joyous Winter Break and a Happy New Year!

      Next Generation Science Standards

Our Educational Services department provided the Board of Trustees with an update of the adoption of Next Generation Science Standards at Berryessa Union School District. This presentation provides the implementation model and timeline for NGSS adoption.
      Students Publish Their Stories

We love it when our teachers merge the latest in technology with time-tested strategies for developing academic fluency. James Vaughn, a 4th/5th teacher from Summerdale Elementary School, uses Storybird with his students to create beautiful electronic books. Students select from art images on the Storybird website to help illustrate their own writing. The books can be shared with their families at home and proud parents can even purchase a physical copy of the child's book!

Science, Technology, Engineering, Math... and Soccer?

Yes. You read that right. At several Berryessa elementary schools, we are combing Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) lessons with soccer! Our District has partnered with Coast 2 Coast's Lunch Recess program to offer children an active opportunity to practice teamwork, fair play, and soccer techniques while learning STEM principles taught by local college soccer players.

      Parent Education

At Berryessa schools, through our administrators and parent-teacher organizations, we provide our community with workshops and resources to become better parents and advocates for their children.
Early Learning Program at Toyon Elementary School
Berryessa caregivers recently completed The Latino Literacy Project, offered in partnership with our District and the Berryessa Public Library. This workshop is a family reading project based on bilingual books. We were proud that all of our Berryessa schools were represented with at least one parent from each school attending this five-week course and 90% with perfect attendance!

In January, we will begin a new Spanish-language parenting workshop series - Soluciones Cariñosas. This workshop will focus on positive discipline and trust-building tools for caregivers. Please scroll down to the "community" section of this newsletter for more information.
Parent Education opportunities are announced through the school newsletter's, District newsletter, our Facebook page, our website, and our parent-teacher organizations.

      Strong Recycling Program

Noble Elementary School fourth grade students, along with Principal Andrea Ortiz, presented their comprehensive recycling program at the November School Board meeting. Through an eight-year partnership with TerraCycle, Noble students are able to recycle a broader range of items than our city's recycling program accepts. Currently, Noble students collect juice pouches, snack bags, energy bars, candy wrappers, and writing instruments and Terracycle reuses, recycles, or upcycles the materials. Noble's biggest collection saved over 80,000 juice pouches from being put into our landfills!

      Parent Teacher Groups Connect Us

We would like to thank all of our fabulous parent-teacher organizations that work tirelessly to make their communities a better place. These volunteer-run groups organize community social gatherings, advocate with local and state government on behalf of public education, and provide a strong connection between school and home life. Getting involved in your school's parent-teacher organization is a wonderful way to meet parents (often the parent's of your child's friend) and give you an inside look at what is happening on campus.
