Remember in Prayer
During this time of polarization and conflict in our nation, we remember in our prayers the people whose daily realities and needs we often forget, including those who are homeless, immigrants, people in prison or living with a record of imprisonment, those without adequate health care, communities in economic crisis and people living in poverty.  More prayers...

Synod Blog: If Church Had Commencement
By Pr. Erika Uthe
‘Tis the season. My fridge is plastered with graduation open house invitations as our young people celebrate their accomplishments, look to the future, and revel in the glory of having successfully navigated what is becoming an increasingly difficult journey through school. While the nature of these celebrations is something that ought to be discussed at some point, I think that there is something to celebrations. Something significant is happening. Something familiar and routine is ending and the future is wide open, unknown, and spread out before them.

As I talk about commencement for graduates, I can’t help but draw parallels with the church today. For a long time, I think, the church has known that this graduation was coming. We know that something significant is happening in our culture, in our churches, in our world. (There’s an entire unit at churchwide called Research and Evaluation that has been tracking the trends in society that point to decline.) We have seen that something familiar and routine is ending. We know that the future is wide open, unknown, and spread out before us. Continue reading...

A Place for All: Webcast

Join ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton on Wednesday, May 25, from 7-8 p.m. (CDT) for a live webcast where we explore what it means to be a welcoming congregation within the ELCA. As members of the ELCA, we believe that we are a church that belongs to Christ. There is a place for everyone here. As we continue the conversation on racism in the United States, we must look within our own congregations and communities. Do the people in our pews reflect the people in our neighborhoods? How do we take steps to invite and welcome our neighbors?

Participate and follow the conversation using #ELCAwebcast.

Joining Bishop Eaton for this conversation are:
+ Rev. Ruben Duran, director for new congregations for the ELCA
+ Rev. Matt Stuhlmuller, Pastor, Redeemer Church, Chicago, Ill.
+ And moderator, Mikka McCracken, Director for Planning and Engagement, ELCA World Hunger

During the 60 minute webcast, the panel will explore a number of topics including:
+ How can our congregations reflect the makeup of their communities?
+ How can we, as the body of Christ, be present within our communities and invitational to our neighbors?
+ How can we engage with and advocate for vulnerable populations in our communities?

We encourage you to invite a group to view the webcast together. If you are unable to view it live, the webcast will be recorded and available on this page or at: http://livestream.com/elca.

A recording of the webcast will be made available after it airs. For more information, please visit www.elca.org/webcast.

Practice Discipleship Initiative
Join us for our first Practice Discipleship offering June 11 at Faith Lutheran in Eldridge from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. as we engage in Wondering Through Service Learning and Wondering in Prayer. Training is FREE! Lunch is provided ($5 per person). Register for the June 11 training online.

Wondering through Service Learning – Service learning moves service projects and mission trips from one-time events to experiences that open minds and hearts to new ways of thinking and acting. For example, youth might ponder tough questions about poverty in your hometown, notice the incredible artistry within God's creation, or glimpse the wisdom of a senior citizen in a simple conversation. By emphasizing adequate preparation, intentional reflection, and sharing stories with others, service experiences can be brought to life in profound, astonishing ways. (written by Mark Jackson, Professor & Chair of Children, Youth & Family Studies, Director, Center for Community Engagement, Trinity Lutheran College)

Wondering in Prayer – We teach children the Lord’s Prayer and prayers for meals and bedtimes, and we often teach children how to pray for friends and family. We often stop there. But we are called to worship God with all of heart and soul
and mind. So, in this session we will explore prayer forms that engage the senses and the imagination, opening a space for us both to dwell and to wonder in God. (written by Dr. Mindy Makant, Assistant Professor of Religious Studies, Lenoir-Rhyne University)

The new ELCA Federal Credit Union will open soon
The new ELCA Federal Credit Union, with offices in the Lutheran Center Building in Chicago, will soon be open for business. The grand opening celebration will be Monday, June 6. ELCA members, congregations, synods and the churchwide organization—and their employees—are all eligible to join the credit union to take advantage of a portfolio of deposit accounts, loans and other services. This new ELCA-sponsored credit union supports the ELCA’s mission to promote responsible stewardship of members’ and congregations’ financial resources.
