“Amazing grace!

How sweet the sound, that saved a wretch

like me.”

FALL WORSHIP TIMES RESUME
8:45 Contemporary
11:15 Traditional
Classes for all ages at 10 am

We who follow Jesus are often being asked to do things that we find difficult. We are told to love those who are unlovable. We are to serve others without counting the cost. But perhaps the toughest command is the one to forgive. And we are asked to do it not because it is easy, but because we are to model the forgiveness that has been extended to us…first. Won’t you come and consider with us what it means that grace flows downhill?

Sunday's Message: Rooted in Experience: It flows downhill…
Sunday's Scriptures: Genesis 50:15-21 and Matthew 18:21-35
This Sunday's Worship Music:  Click here to listen to a play list for the 8:45 Contemporary service on YouTube.

A Warm Welcome for Our New Accompanist
Our music ministry team is growing!  Tonight, our choir will meet our new accompanist, Isaac Becker-Howell.  Adrienne and Isaac will work with our choirs on Thursday evenings, and Isaac will be part of our worship music team on Sunday mornings. We asked Isaac to write a few words of introduction:
"Hello, my name is Isaac Becker-Howell, and I will be your new church pianist. I have worked as a church musician for thirteen years, and I earned my Bachelors degree in piano performance from Baldwin - Wallace College along with a Masters degree in piano from Miami University of Ohio. My wife, Courtney, and I just moved back to the Cleveland area from an eight-year stint in Baltimore, Maryland in order to move our two-year-old son Sam closer to family, and we will be moving to Solon permanently very soon. In addition to being a church musician and performer, I am also a general music teacher at St. Mark Catholic School in Lakewood. I am very excited to be joining your musical team, and thank you for the incredible kindness and warmth you’ve already shown me!"

The Education Hour Returns THIS SUNDAY, September 17 at 10 o'clock!

At Brecksville United Methodist Church we are committed to our Sunday morning education hour and how it helps develop a community of believers.

  • Ancestors of the New Testament.  Join Pastor Clark in room 301 as we look at our spiritual ancestors. You will be amazed to learn that they are a lot like you! Hear the stories of these men and women called by God to do amazing things, and see how they fit into the larger narrative of our faith story.
  • Digging into our Methodist Roots. As we make our way forward as faithful followers of Jesus, we would do well to revisit our roots.  Join Jenny Gee in the Chapel to explore the founder of Methodism, John Wesley’s, three simple rules for living the Christian life and five means of grace.

For the young ones: Our children, from birth through eighth grade, learn alongside loving, faithful adult teachers.  Together, we all become familiar with the stories and teachings of the Bible.  These gifted and talented adults encourage learning in a creative, supportive and age-appropriate environment, nurturing children’s growth in faith.  During the 10 o’clock education hour, kids join with children of similar ages.

Our youth gather under the leadership and guidance of our awesome youth director, Dana Schwendeman, who helps the kids see the relevance of the stories in scripture within their own life.  Kids also will take a look at some of the tough situations they find themselves in and explore how a person of faith can respond.  In addition to Sunday mornings, High School Youth group meets Sunday evenings, and Middle School Youth group meets on Tuesday afternoons.

Young Adult Small Group.
Are you between the ages of 18 and 30? A new Young Adult Small Group is forming during the 10 o’clock education hour.  We'll gather in the Library this week (a room within room 301 - near the balcony).  Grab a coffee and let's talk about ideas for the group. What would you like this group to be?  Can't make it this week?  Reply to this e-mail and we'll keep you in the loop!

All Youth Dinner, September 17 from 5—7 pm. We will gather together in the Fellowship Hall for fun, RIGATONI, and fellowship! Students in grades 6-12 are invited to join us for a meal and then a large group game.  Hope to see you there!
We're creating a photo gallery wall in the youth room of youth group pictures.  Do you have any?  Bring one along, and we'll hang it up!  Special thanks to the Rybak family for sponsoring this month’s dinner.  Want to host a future dinner? Reply to this e-mail for details!

Pastor’s Midweek Bible Study
Begins Wednesday, September 20 at 7:00 pm in The Parlor
Join Pastor Clark and friends as we explore the Gospel of Luke.  Luke was an educated and cultured man, the first real historian to write about Jesus. He places Jesus at the heart of the first-century Jewish and Roman worlds into which the Christian gospel exploded. We know that what Jesus said, what he did and what happened to him has changed the course of history.  Pick up your book in the office or this Sunday!   Pastor Clark asks that we read the first two chapters so we can begin our discussion on Wednesday.

One week from Sunday!  Our Story, God’s Story.  September 24 at 7 pm

What and where is God calling Brecksville United Methodist Church to do and be? How has God uniquely gifted and graced us to be in ministry with Brecksville and our surrounding community “for such a time as this?”

Join us Sunday evening, September 24 at 7 pm. Rev. Dr. Heather Lear from the UMC’s Discipleship Ministries in Nashville, TN, will lead us in a time of discovering how our stories as individuals and as church are poised to address our community’s current story. All are welcome!

In preparation for the 24th, please spend time in prayer and listening for where God may already be working in our midst. As you talk with friends, neighbors, and co-workers, what are some of the struggles facing those outside our walls? What might be the places where Brecksville can partner with God to address hurt and provide hope?

Pastor Clark asks that we also consider these questions:
  • How have we been blessed by Brecksville UMC’s mission and outreach program in the past?
  • How were decisions made about which mission concerns we would support as a congregation?
  • How can we better “own” our outreach and mission programming as a congregation?

We celebrate our human family’s diversity of sexual orientation, gender identity, race, ethnicity, age, faith history, economic status, marital status, physical and mental ability, and education. We affirm that all people are created in the image of God and as beloved children of God, all are worthy of God’s love and grace. We welcome the full inclusion of all people in the life and ministries of Brecksville United Methodist Church as we journey toward reconciliation through Christ.
