Lent 2018 - A resource for congregations
Planning for Lent is in full swing for some, but not yet on the radar for others. Here in the Office of the Bishop, we are preparing a resource for Lent that will connect directly to the theme of the 2018 synod assembly.

Earlier this year, many congregations and individuals participated in 'Pigs with a Purpose,’ raising awareness and financial support for the hunger ministries of the ELCA and of the Southeastern Iowa Synod. We are planning a similar effort that will bolster ELCA Water Projects and related ministries. At our next assembly, presentations and activities will link the need for clean water to our proclamation of the good news of Jesus Christ.

In preparation for the coming assembly emphasis and the gathering of gifts, we will provide related resources for worship and faith formation to be used in the season of Lent. As yet another sign that we are #inthisTogether, these resources and more information will be available by December 1, 2017. If you have questions, please contact Pastor Erika Uthe, Assistant to the Bishop, uthe@seiasynod.org

Peer Ministry Leadership Conference
The 2018 Peer Ministry Leadership Conference (PMLC) is a great opportunity for you or your group to grow as Christian leaders. The PMLC is a casual, group learning environment focused on participants gaining the knowledge, skills, and experience needed to not just be Peer Ministers, but also to teach the curriculum to others. We are blessed to have Lyle Griner, the author of Peer Ministry with us to lead us for the weekend.

February 17th- 8:30 a.m. - 6 p.m.
February 18th 12:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.
Grand View University-Des Moines
Light refreshments provided during the conference.  Participants will be responsible for their own meals. There are several dining options available on and near campus.

Thanks to a wonderful donor the conference is only $40 for the first person from your congregation and $20 for each additional person. Bring a whole team of staff, leaders, and youth! The PMLC is open to anyone high school age and older.

If you have any additional questions, please contact Angie Larson (alarson@luthermemorialdsm.org), the Director of Peer Ministry at Luther Memorial Church and Grand View University.

Prayers
We continue to pray for refugees and immigrants, especially in the Middle East and Europe, asking God to grant them hope, safety, welcoming communities in which to rebuild their lives and resilience; pray we never lose empathy and active concern for their struggles, suffering and losses.

December 3-First Sunday of Advent

So that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ. ~1 Corinthians 1:3-9

The new church year begins with a season of waiting. Paul’s words to the church in Corinth is a reminder to us today. As a community of faith- a whole-you are not lacking any spiritual gift. While you wait, it is time to see what ways the gifts of the whole body of Christ can be used to share the good news.
