Live Seminar

Question Of The Week

Question: "I had a window pop up on my computer similar to the one above (ed. note: you can click on the picture to see a larger image.).  I wasn't sure what to do.  Should I be updating drivers on my computer?"

Answer:  If you were to search this question on Bing or some other search engine, you'd find computer techs who give a variety of answers.  I'm going to give you my own answer based on the fact that I've worked on computers since 1983.  My answer to this question can be summed up in one word: "No!"

Here at Keystone Computer Concepts, we only update drivers under two conditions: 1) we are setting up a new computer and have the computer in the shop; and, 2) when there is a distinct problem with a particular piece of hardware on a computer and updating the driver may fix the problem.

"Why not update drivers?" you ask.  There are a number of reasons.  First, and foremost, is that when you see windows like the one above, they are usually not from the hardware manufacturer but, rather, from some outside company trying to trick you into installing (and perhaps paying for) their software. This is a great way of allowing Malware onto your computer.  Second, driver installation can sometimes be tricky.  There are often various versions of drivers to install and, should you pick the wrong one, it's possible to crash your entire computer.

In summary, don't install any programs that want to update drivers and, if you have some hardware that's not working, check with us about updating the driver.
