During our fall semester, MYC singers are embarking on a musical journey across the globe as we explore compositions connected to the diverse cultures inhabiting Madison's nine sister cities: Ainaro, East Timor; Arcatao, El Salvador; Camaguey, Cuba; Freiburg, Germany; Kanifing, The Gambia; Mantua, Italy; Obihiro, Japan; Tepatitlán, Mexico; and Vilnius, Lithuania. As we study the wide variety of musical forms that emerged from these nine regions, and think about the reasons we're drawn to establish sister city relationships, we're examining both the common forces that drive the creative expression of artists from all cultures and the unique contributions that artists of our sister cities have made to the worldwide musical canon.

We invite you to join us for this semester's culminating concert series on Sunday, December 10, 2017 at First Congregational Church in Madison. This concert is generously endowed by the Diane Ballweg Performance Fund with additional support from our sponsors, American Girl's Fund for Children, BMO Harris Bank, and Wisconsin Arts Board. Concert details and ticket information are included in our Upcoming Performances section below.

You'll see MYC students and staff singing all over the Madison area this semester, as we engage in a wide variety of collaborative projects. Singers from each of our nine performing choirs were honored to join Ari Shapiro of NPR's All Things Considered as well as hosts of S-TownHigher Ground, and The Moth Milwaukee for Wisconsin Public Radio's grand centennial event, "The Power of Story" in Overture Hall on October 14.

Next month, Cantilena will appear at the Wisconsin Science Festival with UW Chemistry Professor Bassam Shakhashiri in the "Science is Fun" program on Sunday, November 5, at the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery.

Glorious Overture Hall will be our second home in November and December, first as 20 MYC singers from nearly every choir take the stage in Madison Opera's Carmen (November 3 & 5) and again a month later when Con Gioia, Cantabile, and Ragazzi perform in A Madison Symphony Christmas December 1-3.

On November 29, MYC conductor Lisa Kjentvet and MYC alumnus Eliav Goldman will host a new musical workshop at the Odyssey Junior program, part of the UW Odyssey Project, which helps launch the college careers of promising adult students who face financial challenges. Odyssey Junior students are the children and grandchildren of Odyssey scholars, and each component of the program focuses on deeply engaging with the arts and humanities. Several Odyssey Junior students are also singing in MYC's introductory choirs this fall.

MYC's School and Community Choral Program continues to engage a diverse group of enthusiastic students at Lincoln and Leopold elementary schools and the Leopold Choir will brighten the spirits of weary travelers at the Dane County Airport with "Tunes in the Terminal" on Wednesday, December 20.

This summer, 67 members of our boychoirs will make the transatlantic trip to the Aberdeen International Youth Festival, a wonderful opportunity to engage with young artists from all over the world and hone our musical skills in the magical atmosphere of medieval cathedrals, seaside towns, and the cobblestone streets of the Granite City.

As we look forward to making new memories of this always-wonderful festival experience, we are also working hard to ensure that financial hardships will not prevent our singers from taking part in this spectacular, life-changing opportunity. If you would like to join our efforts to make this trip possible for students who would not otherwise be able to afford to join their choirmates on an international tour, please consider a donation to our Scotland Tour Scholarship Fund. You may give online through our website or mail a contribution to: Madison Youth Choirs, P.O. Box 5233, Madison, WI 53705. Thanks for making this amazing experience possible for our students!

As our Intergenerational Choir prepares for its 7th session of blending the voices of MYC singers and residents of Capitol Lakes retirement community, we are thrilled to welcome several alumni into the choir as well. Madison Children's Choir alumni Emily (Dannemiller) Dimond, Kate (Mize) Lind, Kari Nonn, Carrie Rank, Stephanie JeSchonek, and Ella (Jarvis) Tschopik, and MYC alum Eliav Goldman will sing with us once again this fall. If you are a Madison Boychoir, Madison Children's Choir, or MYC alum interested in being a part of this innovative ensemble, there's still time to join us!

Combined rehearsals will be held at Capitol Lakes (333 W. Main St., Madison) on the first three Wednesdays in November (11/1, 11/8, & 11/15) from 6pm-7pm in advance of the concert on Saturday, November 18, 7pm in Capitol Lakes Grand Hall. If you are interested in joining us as a singer, please contact Lisa Kjentvet.  We hope to see many familiar faces, both on stage and in the audience at the free public performance on November 18!

The generosity of our donors and sponsors is the key to MYC's ability to create innovative new programs, expand successful initiatives to serve more young people, and ensure that no student will ever be denied an opportunity at MYC due to their financial circumstances.

We extend our sincere gratitude to the hundreds of individual and organizational contributors who invest in the education of our young singers and the many new and returning concert program advertisers whose businesses help support youth arts in our community.
