A Fantastic First Week

We are proud of the hard work our staff contributed to making our first week back to school a success. In fact, it was one of the smoothest in recent years and this is quite a feat given the many construction programs, both by the district and by the City of San Jose, surrounding all of our campuses! Many of our summer modernization and improvement projects have been completed and are being enjoyed by our students. The projects that were delayed are quickly wrapping up with crews working weekends to meet deadlines.

The announcement section of this newsletter lists some road closures due to City work near campus. Please read them to help ensure your child arrives on time to school.
Congressman Mike Honda and former NFL player Jonathan Martin Share Anti-Bullying Message with Piedmont Students

Piedmont Middle School students participated in a positive anti-bullying event hosted by the Congressional End Bullying Caucus chaired by local Congressman Mike Honda. Former 49er NFL football player Jonathan Martin shared his stories and experiences with bullying from his adolescent years and time in professional sports.

If your children qualified for free or reduced lunch in 2015-16, you will need to complete a 2016-17 free/reduced meal application to see if they will continue to qualify.

If we do not receive a complete application for your children by September 9, 2016, they will automatically lose their free or reduced-price eligibility status and will need to pay full price for meals beginning on September 12, 2016.

Lunch prices for the 2016-17 school year:
  •        Lunch $3.00
  •        Reduced price lunch $0.40
  •        Brunch (at Middle Schools) $2.00
  •        Reduced price brunch $0.30

If you did not receive an application in the mail, you may pick one up from your school office or from Child Nutrition Services at the District Office. Anyone may apply at any time during the school year.  However, the more students at your school who qualify for free or reduced price meals at the start of the school year, the more money your school can receive from the government to spend on student programs.

BUSD Educational Services has scheduled a parent/guardian meeting to provide our families with additional information about the assessment results and helpful tips to assist you with your child's academic success.

Before the start of school, all teachers participated in two mandatory days of professional development. Classified staff participated in a mandatory half a day of professional development. This is part of an initiative by the district and School Board to increase professional development opportunities.

Classified staff participated in Automatic Defibrillator training along with sessions on supporting special education students or how to support the Common Core and writing instruction.

Teachers selected professional development workshops from over 25 sessions related to their instruction specialities ranging from teaching English Learners, music, art, science, and writing.

We are excited to see how our teachers and staff put their new instructional strategies to use this year!
