Dear friends,

As seems to be the “norm” for northern New Jersey, we have jumped right over spring and into summer!  While some may complain about the heat, our residents on both campuses have been enjoying the chance to be outdoors!  We also used the nice weather for “Cinco de Mayo” celebrations.  The Jewish Home at Rockleigh residents went out for a Mexican lunch and the Gallen Day Center participants had a party with dancing and delicious food!

We had an action packed week across the Jewish Home Family this week. At the Jewish Home at Rockleigh, we had two visits from Solomon Schecter Day School students. On Sunday, we had a wonderful dance performance featured Jessica Ilin and Orli Bruhim. The audience gave them a long and enthusiastic ovation. On Wednesday, Maya Schonburg visited with her residents and played her ukulele and sang. Everyone loves having students visit and entertain, it’s always a highlight. On Thursday we celebrated singer James Brown’s 85th birthday with a program and lots of music. Later in the day we had our Lag B’Omer celebration complete with music and dancing.

The Gallen Day Center’s week was also a great one.  One of the highlights was a full day of baking on Wednesday.  In the morning, we made zucchini bread and in the afternoon baked sugar cookies.  Delicious day to be in the Gallen Center!  We also had our two great days of specialized Parkinson’s programming, combining different therapeutic interventions, education and support.  This Parkinson’s specialization has clearly met a need and attendance in this program continues to grow.  Of course, there was also more music in the Gallen Center this week with the May birthday party, complete with our favorite activity—dancing!

The week began musically at Jewish Home Assisted Living as well as Sunday’s program featured the Tavim a capella choir from Congregation Beth Shalom in Teaneck. On Monday, the residents and staff in Memory Lane enjoyed planting marigolds together and will enjoy caring for these flowers and watching them grow. On Tuesday, the Linking Hearts group of volunteers came to visit and they led a craft activity with residents. And of course on Thursday Rabbi Korenblit led our Lag B’Omer celebration.

One special highlight at Jewish Home Assisted Living has been going on for several weeks. We’ve had a young woman volunteering with us for her Bat Mitzvah project. She’s been interviewing residents about their lives and their history. Once completed, each of the residents who participated will receive a DVD with their interview. What a great project and what a great keepsake for both the resident and their family!

This was a blog week for me and here is the link: As always, your feedback is welcome.

All the best,
