“ReuseFest” Kicks off 2017 Collections

Clean out the closets, the garage and the basement! The Pennsylvania Resources Council’s sixth annual ReuseFest will offer a one-day collection event for materials destined for reuse by local nonprofits. The festivities will take place on Earth Day – Saturday, April 22 – from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at UPMC Passavant “green” parking lot off Babcock Boulevard in McCandless, Allegheny County.

Stop by ReuseFest between 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. to enjoy a special Earth Day celebration featuring food trucks, pop-up shops and giveaways.

All materials donated during the four-hour event will be reused in some fashion, whether resold, repurposed or given to those in need in our region and around the world. This year's collection will support Animal Rescue League, Brother’s Brother, Catholic Charities, Construction Junction, Free Ride, Global LinksGoodwill, Off the Floor, Pittsburgh Center for Creative Reuse and UPMC Medical Equipment Recycling Program.
Learn to Use a Rain Barrel at a Workshop This Spring
Discover how to harvest rainwater from your roof, store it in a barrel and use it in the landscape. Learn about problems associated with stormwater runoff, ways to conserve water in your home, and techniques to reduce your contribution to watershed pollution.

PRC offers Rain Barrel workshops on April 8, 11, 12, 18, 20, 22, 26 and 27.

Dispose of Medication April 29 on "Drug Take-Back Day"
Nationwide on Drug Take-Back Day, more than 5,000 collection sites will provide patients, caregivers and pet owners with an opportunity to properly dispose of unwanted prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications at no cost.

Hundreds of drop-off locations will be available throughout Pennsylvania. Search the DEA's database to find a nearby collection site.

PRC Welcomes Two Staff Members to Western Office
PRC is pleased to welcome two new staff members to its Western Office in Pittsburgh.

Working as an Environmental Analyst, Omoye Aikhuele will oversee the PA Department of Environmental Protection's Recycling Hotline.

Dakota Campbell's position as a Zero Waste Specialist will entail supporting PRC’s varied schedule of events and Zero Waste services.

Request a “Stream Smart” Storm Water House Call
All reaches of the Darby Cobbs watershed have been declared impaired by the PADEP, due largely to contaminated stormwater runoff from roofs, roads and driveways. PRC presents the Stream Smart Storm Water House Call project to help property owners determine the best ways to manage and reduce their stormwater runoff and contamination. Remediation efforts may include rain garden or barrel installations, gutter and downspout redirection, and pervious surface replacements.

This free program is open to residents of the Darby Creek watershed, which includes 31 municipalities in southeastern Pennsylvania. Email Jayne Young at to register for the program. We all have a right to drinkable, swimmable water, so do your part today to make it a reality!
