General Conference News

February 23, 2019

Today, as we begin this Special Called General Conference, we start with prayer. Today is not just about an opening prayer, but it is a day, a full day, of prayer and worship. We gather as a global church: a church made up of different cultures, different races, different traditions, different ideas and perhaps different beliefs. Nevertheless, we gather as a church all believing our God hears our prayers and acts when God's people repent and call out to God.

It is a beautiful sight to look out among our called and elected leaders and see them in one accord calling out for God's will to be done. While many have entered the building stressed and filled with anxiety, and while many have connected to the live stream worried about what will happen, this day of prayer reminds us God is here among us.

Fear not, Holston Conference. We have begun Holy Conferencing the right way. We are seeking God's will, and I can only believe God sees this as good.

Our delegation began this morning with a beautiful prayer from Anne Travis. We invite you to pray with us:

Gracious and Loving God, we come before you this morning with gratitude for safe travels, with gratitude for a night of rest, with gratitude for our United Methodist Church that has nurtured us. We are grateful for our congregations and all the people of Holston who are praying for us, and we are grateful for each other. Today, God, we enter this convention center with hope, with anticipation, and many of us with great weariness. But, God, most of all today we enter this place to worship you for you alone are God, and we come today to praise you. So fill our worship with your Holy Spirit. Fill our hearts with the powerful love of Jesus, in whose name we pray. Amen.
