Interim in Retrospect
As we look forward to welcoming Pastor Danielle on Sunday on May 14, let's take a quick look back at some of the huge steps we've taken as a congregation during nearly two years of interim time.

We resolved our relationship with Broadway United Church of Christ, and reclaimed full use of our building space. Through the hard work of a team of dedicated congregants, Pastor Ann, Congregation Council, and a vote of the congregation at a special congregational meeting in January 2016, we were able to reach an agreement with BUCC and now have full use of our building space. This was a major accomplishment, and a significant step forward, opening up a new chapter in our ministry.
We found an all-star new Senior Pastor. We formed the Self-Study Task Force and Call Committee in March 2016 and ended our search on February 26, 2017 with an exciting special call meeting. Thanks to the dedication of our Self-Study Task Force and Call Committee, we accomplished this process in less than a year!

In his annual report just four months ago, David Richards, chair of the Call Committee, said, "The candidates we have met with so far are all gifted pastors; some no doubt may have served our needs just fine, which makes the discernment process difficult. But with your support we continually strive to find that exceptional person who will not only be fine, but will thrive here."

When the Call Committee presented Pastor Danielle to the Congregation Council shortly after, they were beaming with excitement.
We're getting a new photo directory to help us all know names, faces, and email addresses. One of Pastor Ann's goals during the interim was to make a new Advent photo directory of all our members and friends. "A photo directory is a great gift to a new pastor, and to a congregation," Pastor Ann said often and enthusiastically. With the final proof of our directory scheduled to arrive tomorrow (Tuesday, April 25), we are incredibly close!
We're living into being one congregation that worships in two languages. Making increasingly more of our documentation and communications bilingual; holding a bilingual Consecration Potluck in October the past two years; increasing outreach in English about 1:45pm congregational lunches and Latino traditions like the Three Kings Celebration; and launching "Summer Suppers," a bilingual, intergenerational worship and Bible study program on six Wednesday evenings in July and August -- these are just a few of the ways we have become more united as a bilingual congregation during this interim time.
We've cleaned up and tightened up administration. From establishing weekly staff meetings to clearing out storage spaces, Pastor Ann has worked tirelessly to clean up, clarify, and organize Advent across the board. Her hope has been to equip our new Senior Pastor to launch into ministry and flourish. Pastor Danielle will step into a congregation with coordinated and equipped staff, passionate and dedicated ministry leaders, and faithful and welcoming congregants. We're ready!
We are extraordinarily grateful for Pastor's Ann's focused, effective, and compassionate leadership during this interim time. Please join us for Pastor Ann's last two Sundays with us as Interim Senior Pastor on April 30 and May 7. We are also grateful for the dedication and hard work of so many leaders and volunteers, and the faithfulness and support of this whole community. We have truly come far, and are ready for an exciting new chapter in the life of Advent!

One continuing challenge, which we have stepped up to so far during the interim period with initiatives like the Financial Stewardship Task Force and the "Close the Gap" campaign, is adjusting to our new financial picture. We are still in the midst of a process our Treasurer, Pastor Charles Miller, calls "righting the ship." This means that our position is not cause for alarm, but does call for careful stewardship by leaders and congregants, and even then will take some time to restore balance.

In their efforts to be as diligent and transparent as possible, our Congregation Council invites you to another Congregational Update at 10:10am on May 7, detailed below.
Congregational Update
Sunday, May 7 at 10:10am in the basement fellowship hall

The Congregation Council invites you to a congregational update on Sunday, May 7 at 10:10am to hear news about our financial position after the first four months of the year. This update will be a time for us to review our status before Pastor Danielle begins, as well as a time to learn how you can be of support with your time, talent, and possessions.
This Sunday: Ice Cream Social
Sunday, April 30th at 12pm in the basement fellowship hall

The organizers of our Annual Congregational Retreat this August 4-6 invite you to an ice cream social after 11am worship on Sunday, April 30. Come take part in our ice cream sundae sculpture contest (Curious what this is? You'll just have to come and find out!). Then, enjoy your ice cream sundae and learn more about our annual retreat at the beautiful Koinonia retreat center two hours upstate. It’s a weekend that leaves everyone feeling more connected and rejuvinated -- so consider joining us!
Welcoming Pastor Danielle
Pastor Danielle Miller, our new Senior Pastor, will join us for her first Sunday on May 14. That's less than a month away. Be sure to join us for worship on this exciting day!

We are also collecting a special Welcome Appeal to support Pastor Danielle as she begins her leadership and ministry here at Advent. Hopefully you saw the special e-letter we sent out about this on Friday. We invite you to contribute a gift of any size to this Welcome Appeal for Pastor Danielle. You can give online here, or using a special envelope in worship.

Sermon Video: Pastor Becca Seely of LMHE
Our Mission of the Month this April is Lutheran Ministries in Higher Education (LMHE). As the pastor and executive director of LMHE, Pastor Becca Seely leads the citywide Vine NYC College Ministry Network and Advent’s own LaMP Campus Ministry in Morningside Heights. Her ministry with LMHE helps young adults connect to supportive Christian communities, grow in faith, and claim vocations of service to neighbor during their transformative student years.

Earlier this month Pastor Becca shared a beautiful sermon with us in worship about coming out of our tombs, being our fullest selves, and claiming the salvation and new life Christ brings us here and now. Whether you missed it or just want to re-watch it (we do), here's a video of that sermon. Enjoy, and please consider supporting this valuable ministry with college students in New York City by making a special contribution to LMHE this April.
