God's Forgiveness with Sr. Dianne Bergant, CSA
Sr. Dianne explains the significance of Ex 34:6 when the Jewish people worshipped the golden calf. God had a covenant with his people which promised, “I will be your God and you will be my people.” This covenant held responsibilities for the people to follow the law, the Ten Commandments, which were directives on how to act.
God’s responsibility was mercy, not punishment, a relationship of mercy.
She then offers new insights on the Prodigal Son and Unforgiving Servant parables in Matthew’s gospel. If Jesus is the face of the mercy of God, then we are the face of the mercy of Jesus, mercy freely given even when the person has gone astray.
Jesus tells us to “be merciful as the Father is merciful.”Since we come from God, we are wired to be merciful. Sr. Dianne calls us to mercy, in the footsteps of Pope Francis in his book, The Face of Mercy.
