Lutheran Day on the Hill
300 Lutherans gathered on February 21 to advocate for refugees, clean water and child and family support services.

After opening devotions by Bishop Michael Burk, The Rev. Andrew Genszler, president and CEO, Lutheran Metropolitan Ministry, reminded us "justice is important but it does not come before Jesus."

Before making their way to the state capitol, participants gathered at Capitol Hill Lutheran Church to learn more about advocacy and the issues at hand. Once at the capitol, participants teamed up to talk to their legislatures to advocate on behalf of our vulnerable neighbors. The Rev. Paul Ostrem has been participating in Lutheran Day on the Hill for eight or nine years now. Ostrem said, "It's a matter of witness. It's a matter of loving and serving our neighbors in need. The mission statement of Lutheran Services in Iowa is a mission statement for all of us - namely that we 'respond to the love of Jesus Christ through compassionate service.'"

Reformation 500
The ELCA is one church body organized in three expressions - congregations, synods and the churchwide organization. Each expression has its particular functions, but all three share a common mission of doing God's work in the world and proclaiming the good news of Jesus Christ. Congregations, members, synods and other institutions of the ELCA will be observing the 500th anniversary of the reformation by a variety of events and activities in the coming years. Many of the local activities will reflect the magnitude of work being done on a national and international scale.

Follow the link below to find more events and resources surrounding the 500th anniversary of the reformation.

Bread for the World Offering of Letters
The 2017 Offering of Letters: Doing our Part to End Hunger will help you and your church urge Congress to make funding decisions that put us on track to end hunger by 2030. We have made substantial progress against hunger and poverty in recent decades.

Printed Offering of Letters kits will be available in March and can be ordered from the Bread store. However, you can start learning about the issues and planning your letter-writing event now.

Congress has already started making decisions through the budget process on issues that affect our goal to end hunger and poverty by 2030. It is important for your members of Congress to hear from you early and often throughout the year. So don't delay and start planning today.

SUNDAY PRAYER
As Nicodemus approached Jesus under cover of night with his questions, we, too, often come to God when we feel safe and concealed from others with our questions, confessions and thoughts. Thank God for listening to our every prayer and plea, and for friends, people of faith and communities that engender trust and offer refuge when needed.
