JHR Snow

Dear friends,

Our big news for this week is something we are so excited to share! The Jewish Home Family and the Kaplen JCC on the Palisades are partnering to bring the Jewish Home’s Rock Steady Boxing program to the JCC’s location. This has been a number of months in the making and the program will open early in March. As you know, for some time the Jewish Home Family has been involved in developing a center for the care of individuals with Parkinson’s disease. Our program has grown and developed over the last couple of years and includes community education, support groups and many different therapeutic programs focused on those with Parkinson’s. One of the most successful of these programs has been Rock Steady Boxing. Rock Steady uses the tools and techniques of boxing training to help individuals “fight back” against this disease. Our first community location, which will continue, opened at Jewish Home Assisted Living about eighteen months ago. We started with just two classes a week and grew very quickly to a five day a week, multiple classes a day program. Working with the JCC will enable us to reach a different part of our area and bring this important service to more people. We’re delighted to be expanding this program and even more delighted about this partnership and the possibilities it offers.

We were celebrating love and friendship across the Jewish Home Family this past week. Some of the highlights included a Sweetheart Social at the Jewish Home at Rockleigh provided by the members of NCJW. They brought flowers for our residents and shared an afternoon of music and fun. At Jewish Home Assisted Living, we had a “day of love” on Thursday with staff and residents dressed in shades of red and pink. Residents also enjoyed programs of love songs and snacking on heart shaped cookies and red velvet cupcakes. Gallen Day Center participants had a party featuring dancing to love songs and followed that with word games that were themed around (you guessed it!) love.

One of the really special moment this week was a visit to Jewish Home Assisted Living by some of our Gallen Day Center participants. On Monday morning, twelve of our Gallen Center folks and staff loaded into the bus and made the short drive to River Vale. They joined with Jewish Home Assisted Living residents to paint messages on rocks for our Kindness Rocks project. They shared lunch at Assisted Living and sat and visited well after lunch time. The participants are still buzzing about what a great visit it was and how much they loved being at Assisted Living and being involved in this great project.

Other highlights at Jewish Home Assisted Living this week included a Sunday concert with the Shalom Family of Washington township. We also had a great session on Monday with new residents. Called “Transitions,” it is led by Social Work Director Nancy Ames. It’s for residents who have moved in within the last couple of weeks and a chance for us to “check in” and see how things are going. Tuesday’s snowy weather caused us to focus on indoor activities. We baked cupcakes together and popped popcorn to snack on while we watched an afternoon movie. On Wednesday we had our annual Hadassah performance, this year featuring “Mama Knew Best.” These are original plays presented by volunteers from the northern and Pascack Valley chapters of Hadassah and they are always a huge hit with our residents. The week concluded with Professor Ian Drake who spoke on “Should the Electoral College Be Abolished?”

The Gallen Day Center also had some great programs including their Friendship Circle where they focused on sharing stories of acts of kindness. They also continued with their specialized Parkinson’s program including boxing. And Friday featured a performance by a volunteer choir, Harmony Basket, to round out the week.

Sunday’s afternoon of Music at the Jewish Home at Rockleigh featured world renowned musician James Rensink who has performed in 25 countries and in each of the 50 United States. He brought along another well known singer, Korliss Uker, who performs with the Metropolitan Opera. It was an incredible afternoon of music and much enjoyed by residents, family members and staff. On Tuesday, Rockleigh residents painted heart shaped picture frames in an activity called “Picture Me” and that afternoon featured the February birthday party. Friday’s highlight was our new “Friday afternoons with Mrs. Maisel.” We’re watching episodes of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and having snacks and conversation. The show is set in an era that is very familiar to many of our residents and they are having great fun with this event.

Melanie Cohen and I had a whirlwind trip to Florida this week. Each year we visit our donors and friends who are either “snowbirds” or who now live full time in Florida.  We catch them up on all the great things that are happening at the Jewish Home Family. This week we had a lovely luncheon for 21, hosted by our good friends Iris and Norby Strauss (click for photos).

We had some old friends there and made some new friends and there was a lot of wonderful conversation about the new programs and future planning for the Jewish Home Family.

All the best,
