Hurricane Florence Relief

Isaiah 6:8 reminds us of a time when Judah was in great distress, but in the midst of this turmoil God asked for a servant and Isaiah said, “Send me.” Over the next couple of days, we too may see a time of great distress as our neighbors in North and South Carolina continue their evacuation from Hurricane Florence. While we do not know what damage, if any, will occur, we do want to be prepared to serve others in their time of need. We are asking our churches to begin preparing Cleaning Kits and Hygiene Kits for UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) to use for their disaster relief. We are also encouraging our Missional Hubs, to come together to focus on this mission effort.

Please refer to the following links for instructions on creating the cleaning and hygiene kits.

Please collect all kits and coordinate with your District Office for drop off locations, by Monday, October 1. You may also give financial donations to UMCOR. Checks can be made to “Holston Conference” with “Florence response” on the memo line and mail to: Holston Conference, PO Box 850, Alcoa, TN 37701.

If your church plans to be a shelter for evacuees, it is recommended you coordinate with the American Red Cross. ARC is the lead FEMA organization for sheltering, and they have a program that involves insurance, operations trained personnel, contracting, security, etc. The church Trustees should be the lead church organization as they are responsible for the property. Contacting your church insurance carrier is also essential in this effort.

Let us continue to pray for all those within the path of this storm and for those who are willing to serve the needs of others.
