Rabbi Cy Stanway

The unbelievably terrible events in Orlando have brought a most Jewish lesson to America: words matter.  Jews have always known this and that is why there are so many traditions and laws about speech.  Now, while we don’t know all the reasons the terrorist went on a killing spree killing some 50 gay partiers at the Pulse club in Orlando.  The theories are swirling all around.  But whatever the reason - and we may never know - the words of hate, bigotry, and persecution are rampant in religious communities.  We expect this invective in places like Iran and Pakistan and Syria.  These are cultures filled with governments and people who hate everything that the West stands for.  But even in the United States, the words of bigotry are not hard to find.

A few months before the deadly shooting in Orlando one of the Orlando mosques hosted an Islamic scholar who flat out said that all gays should be killed out of ‘compassion.’  How killing gay people is compassionate is beyond me, but nevertheless, that is what he said.

And should we think that such hatred is confined to the Islamic world, in Sacramento just after the massacre the minister said this:

”People say, like: Well, aren’t you sad that 50 sodomites died?” Jimenez said, referencing the initial death toll in Orlando, which authorities later clarified included 49 victims plus the gunman. “Here’s the problem with that. It’s like the equivalent of asking me - what if you asked me: Hey, are you sad that 50 pedophiles were killed today?’

“Um, no, I think that’s great. I think that helps society. You know, I think Orlando, Fla., is a little safer tonight.”  He added: “The tragedy is that more of them didn’t die. The tragedy is - I’m kind of upset that he didn’t finish the job!”

Think words don’t matter?  Think ‘sticks and stones can break my bones but no words ever hurt me?”  Jews know differently.  We know what happens when people preach hatred and God’s authority from the pulpit, whether that pulpit has on it a Torah, a Koran or a New Testament.  People listen and when the right person listens the words become deed and thought becomes fact.

It is challenging to bring peace with words.  But that is exactly what we must do.  At Beth Miriam, I believe our words matter.  That is why no person, gay, straight, transitioning, single, married, man or woman will ever hear the words of hate and bigotry that spew so easily from the dispensers of hate.  I am proud of that.  But lest we become complacent, it is always incumbent upon us to pause and reflect about the power of our utterances.  Are they there to build or to destroy?

The Talmud says, “Say little and do much.”  These days, ‘saying little’ is very, very good advice.

From the Cantor
Cantor Marnie Camhi

Summertime is here! Time for sun, fun and relaxation! Many of our children are heading off to camp and many of us are going on vacations. I hope that you will make time to join us here at TBM for our early (outdoor) summer Shabbat Services! Beginning July 1, services will start at 6:30pm and (weather permitting) they will be outdoors! Please also mark your calendars for our 2 special Shabbat services (with dinner!)- Shabbat Under the Stars Israeli Style on July 15 at 6pm and Southern Fried Shabbat on August 26 at 6pm.  I hope to see you this summer at TBM!

Shalom,

Cantor Marnie                                                                                      cantor@bethmiriam.org

Outdoor Services July 1 to September 1

Outdoor services (weather permitting, of course) are wonderful Shabbat experiences which are musical, reflective, spiritual and beautiful.  These summer services are at 6:30 (except for the Shabbat Under the Stars and the Southern Fried Shabbat)  and will be about an hour long.  Bring the family and then take a stroll on the beach!  You are most welcome and invited to come as you are!  Shorts and T-shirts welcome! Join us at 6:00 pm each Shabbat in July & August for wine and cheese before services.

Visual Tefillah is a unique and fun way to worship.  The service uses no prayerbooks but rather the page and prayers are displayed on a shared screen in the Social Hall.  This give us many opportunities for creative backgrounds.
 .
For the next Visual Tefillah service on September 9, Andrea Phox’s fabulous photographs will serve as the background for the service.  They are evocative of peaceful moments and you are most welcome to experience them.
 .
For the Visual Tefillah service several weeks later (date to be determined), the Religious Practices Committee invites you to send your favorite summer or autumn vacation pictures to serve as the background.  The pictures should not have people in it but rather only scenery.  And the scenery can be of anything!  Send your .jpg or .gif file to rabbi@bethmiriam.org and Rabbi Stanway will choose the pictures that best fit into the service.  Send them by October 1 so he can begin working on the service and notify the congregation of the next visual Tefillah service.
 .
This is a new way to experience Shabbat worship and, with your pictures, an even more personal way.

Are we really talking about the High Holidays now?
Believe it or not the Rabbi and the Cantor are already fully immersed in High Holiday preparation.  One of the tasks is deciding which music we will introduce to the congregation.  Of course most of the music will be the same as in years past, but every so often we find something that is really wonderful.  You are invited to learn the music and hear the new songs by going to the temple homepage at www.bethmiriam.org and scrolling to the bottom of the page where the audio file is located. Enjoy
