Across Europe and around the world, visionary Teen Challenge centers are doing a powerful work among refugees and displaced families. The  escalating violence in the Middle East has resulted in a critical refugee problem worldwide, but no nation is impacted more than Lebanon. In a nation the size of Connecticut, with 4.5 citizens, over 1.5 million registered Syrian refugees have poured into the beautiful fertile Bekaa Valley on the Syrian border as well as an estimated 500,000 illegal Syrian refugees and 450,000 Palestinian refugees. (Click pictures for enlargements)
Garo and the ministry of TC are engaged in a strategic outreach to people in critical need with more than humanitarian aid but compassion and real answers.

After a powerful time of ministry in Beirut, Garo took us through the mountains to minister in the Syrian refugee camps of the fertile Bekaa Valley. Garo points out the UN "tent settlement" from the mountaintop. Despite its name, the Bekaa Valley is actually a high plateau between the Mount Lebanon Range and Jebel Libnan ash-Sharqiyya (Anti-Lebanon Range).  For thousands of years the Bekaa Valley, called “hollow Syria” by the Greeks and Romans, was a corridor linking the Syrian interior with the coastal cities of Phoenicia.

Coming out of the mountains we prayed and met with "camp leaders" for permission to visit the camp to share God's love. Garo and the TC team are reaching out to refugees in the settlements, squatters in Beirut and abandoned people.  In spite of terrible tragedy, there is an incredible opening. Feeling abandoned by their religion, betrayed by their government, and lost without a country,  there is a unique chance to share God's love with people who were once completely closed to the Good News. What a "faith invasion" we will see when they return to their nation with a fresh sense of God's Love and the power of forgiveness.

Often, when we arrived, the muddy streets of the camp  would appear deserted. In moments, as I sang,  we would be surrounded by men and  children of the camp.
I sang, Garo translated, we ministered, what a wonderful time. The faces of the children tell it all. Even in the darkness of this terrible situation, their bright smile cuts through the bone-chilling dampness and cold overwhelming the darkness of their tragedy in the camp.
Snapshots of Hope
The promise of hope and God's love offer a warmth that blankets and fuel cannot. CLICK HERE FOR A PHOTO ALBUM of the faces of these children that touched us so deeply. When we left some of the children cried. I'll never forget the face of the little girl in the purple as she looked at me with tears in her eyes and said, "Please pray, don't forget us." Will you please take a moment, view, and pray for them.

The Life Church's 10th annual Kingdom Fiesta was a 3-night explosion of celebration, love, and the power of God. An amazing multicultural expression of worship and praise with groups from around the world. Kurdish dancers, singers, musical groups from Africa, Madagascar, Nigeria, the Philippines, and China, just to mention a few, brought a flavorful Global mix of worship and praise. Pastor Said and his team, including our dear friend Esther Gayfield made us so welcome and gave us such freedom to minister..
It was a real blessing to sing , minister and see crowded altars. On the first night, in the middle of my opening set the Holy Spirit moved in such a powerful way that Pastor Said Interrupted to invite people to come to Jesus. He led them in prayer and over 200 stood to confess faith in Christ.

One of the most delightful aspects of Kingdom Fest was, as the various dancers performed on stage, folks of each ethnic community in the audience would flock to the front and begin to dance and sing along. Several times folks grabbed me and dragged me into the crowd me to join the dancing, it was so much fun.

In all the camps, we shared the Arabic language version of Cross & the Switchblade.
A man asked "What does mean, this title? How can be a cross and a switchblade together in
such a thing?"

I answered, "A switchblade is a weapon of violence to take life, the cross is also a tool of violence, but it is where Jesus gave us life." It is a powerful contrast of this world and God's Love.

Cross and the Switchblade is such a significant tool because in a "shame-baaed" culture, there is little hope for the addict. The stories of miracles and promise of change lives that pour out of this book offer an amazing picture of the hope that is available in Jesus Christ

34 But Jesus was saying, “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.” And they cast lots, dividing up His garments among themselves.
Luke 23:34

One of Satan's great deceptions is to place the emphasis on our works or trusting our efforts to find or give forgiveness

Almost every person we spoke to from the Beirut “squats” to Syrian refugee camps had suffered some incredible tragedy. Murder of family members, loss of home, possessions, and all that they care about – their pain was overwhelming. The impossible task was to communicate to them the importance of forgiveness.

It is tough to look someone in the eye who has watched their husband and father murdered by terrorists and say, “You need to forgive.”  In the face of the impossibility of this truth, I had to remind myself of the example and biblical command of Jesus. “Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.” (Or as my grandson says, “Forgive us our trash baskets as we forgive those who trash basket against us)

Resentment, bitterness and pain are the harvest of harboring unforgiveness. The truth is, we need to forgive. Meeting these people and hearing their stories convicted me deeply of how petty are the grudges I have held. Unresolved, unforgiveness turns into bitterness that ferments into a crop of anger that in the end wounds the people we love.

The challenge is to communicate that saying, “I forgive you,” is not saying what was done to them is okay. Speaking words of forgiveness his saying, “I will not give your past actions the right to effect my present or steal my future. Holding onto a grudge is like taking poison hoping it will kill person who hurt you.

Whether we were working in the camps, the church, among the Iraqi refugees, or in an apartment in Hay al-Gharbe, Beirut's most dangerous slum, we saw the love of Jesus at work, and a fresh cry for forgiveness.

Whether it is forgiving those who hurt them, or forgiving themselves for what they saw as cowardice -- forgiveness was vital. One man said, “God could never forgive me for running, abandoning my family, leaving my country."

The devil is always right there to whisper in your ear, "God will never forgive you; it's too late."

I have seen Teen Challenge students who have believed this lie for so long that in the end they were left with only a shame identity that drove them to addiction rather than finding victory.

It is time to forgive yourself and let go of your past failures no matter how big the mistake. God has already forgiven you. When re refuse forgiveness, we are put ourselves above God. "Poor me," failure to accept God's forgiveness is not humility, it is arrogance.

Holding onto the shame identity is saying, “Jesus, your blood was not enough, your opinion about me doesn’t matter." It is like driving a nails in his hand once again.

“Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They shall be as wool.” -- Isaiah 1:18

Jesus gave us the most beautiful picture of forgiveness. Even as he hung on the cross, He said, “Father forgive them, they know not what they do.” (Luke 23:34) Did you ever notice that he forgave them in “real-time” while they were gambling for his clothes and then they mocked Him (vs35).

One man said, Jesus can forgive like that I cannot. I reminded him, “You are right! You cannot do it, but Jesus in you can.” Don’t rely on your ability to forgive rely on God’s ability to let forgiveness flow through you.

God give us grace to forgive that we might be forgiven, that we might live in forgiveness.

Pray with us for the global advance of the gospel. Pray for workers for the Harvest ...Teen Challenge Centers in 115 countries need staff and we currently have invitations to start Teen Challenge in over 32 nations. They are crying out for help. They need the power of God to meet a pressing social need... but we know it has a SPIRITUAL ROOT.
MATTHEW 9: 37 Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. 38 Therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest.”
