Health & Safety Update: Emergency Preparedness at SCCLC

Gwynne "Safety Never Takes a Vacation" Rinker, Data and Operations Coordinator

Welcome to the Health & Safety Corner, a new Newsletter spot covering campus safety!

Did you know that SCCLC has a comprehensive Emergency Plan?

Did you know that we have monthly drills covering how to respond to all 5 of the "Big Five" types of incidents? (Shelter in Place, Drop, Cover, and Hold On, Secure Campus, Lockdown/Barricade, and Evacuation)

Did you know that we have emergency walkie-talkies that are state-of-the-art for communicating in the event of an incident?
And that we train staff yearly in CPR, First Aid, and Epi-Pen response?

We do!

With so many disturbing and tragic school safety incidents in the news, and so much uncertainty in the world, we want to be sure that you know that we take the kids' safety extremely seriously at SCCLC. We acknowledge that much of this work is done behind the scenes, and that what may feel like a given to us here at school needs to be fully articulated to the community at large.

Over the years, the SCSD safety plan has evolved from a few dusty pages to a fully comprehensive CERT and FEMA compliant document serving all 9 schools in the district, including SCCLC. This plan helps to clarify the steps we already employ at CLC, from appropriate decision making to practical steps to follow. From this plan, we draw our team roles and procedures. It also helps us align with the district to further streamline communications with local law enforcement and emergency agencies.

You can view the SCSD Big Five plan here:

We are developing several tools to keep you as parents and volunteers in the loop and informed about our preparedness. You'll soon receive a safety 'brochure' that helps you know what to do in the event of an incident occurring on campus. You can stash it in your glove compartment to have at the ready when needed.

We are also creating a classroom "Emergency Flip Book" that will clearly explain the responses to each of the Big Five incidents. These will be posted very prominently in each classroom so that all visiting adults will have an at-a-glance resource to guide them through every type of incident.

Please don't hesitate to let me know if you have any questions. As the Health and Safety gal here on campus (both by training and by job description), I am always more than happy to chat with you at any time about specific incident responses, plan details, or anything else that might be on your mind. We are constantly evaluating our processes to incorporate new developments in disaster planning, and the administration welcomes your feedback, especially as we prepare to move and develop new systems to fit our new space.

Thanks for trusting us with your precious children!

SCCLC Parent Education Night: How to Raise an Adult

Karrie Amsler, Director of Learner Services and Assistant Director

How to Raise an Adult: Break Free of the Overparenting Trap and Prepare Your Kid for Success by Julie Lythcott-Haims has sparked discussions throughout the Bay Area. We thought we’d use this text as a foundation to have a dialogue about stress and anxiety for our children here at the SCCLC. We plan to talk about patterns or trends that we notice in our children right now and how we as parents want to support, model, and care for the young people in our community.

Please join us for a parent/guardian conversation together on Thursday December 7, 2017 from 6:30-7:30pm.

You do not need to have read the book to attend. All are welcome! We will meet in the Spanish Room, #22.

2018 - 2019 Enrollment

SCCLC Enrollment Team

Enrollment for Incoming Kindergarten 2018-2019

It's that time of year again, when we start planning for the 2018-2019 Enrollment season. Over the next few weeks, we will provide you with information regarding the enrollment process. This week we cover Kindergarten age restrictions and community outreach.

Incoming Kindergarten Age Restrictions, including Siblings!

The Administration received several questions about the age restrictions for incoming kindergarten learners, including siblings. Please click here to read the enrollment policy age restrictions for the 2018-2019 school year, which are consistent with the San Carlos School District policy.

Community Outreach / Preschool Ambassadors

The Enrollment Team is increasing community outreach this year, and need volunteers to support this effort.  We are looking for “ambassadors” who can help provide information to the preschool educators/families and act as the contact person for questions. The Enrollment Team will provide the ambassadors with pre-printed flyers, documentation and FAQs to assist with their outreach. Please contact Leigh Casamento ( if you have contacts at the local preschools and are willing to take on this role.

Dancing Under the Stars
Every year, CLC is asked to host a fundraising event for SCEF. For the past two years, CLC has hosted the very successful Dancing Under the Stars fundraiser. We are looking for new leads to organize this event OR create another type of fundraiser altogether. The past two Dancing Under the Stars leads are happy to work with you for a smooth transition by providing all of their resources, contacts, and instruction. Many of the support staff have committed to help again next year. The event has been so successful that both TL and Mariposa has offered to co-sponsor the event, so you will have support there as well. Please consider leading this great fundraiser! If you have any questions or need more information please contact Melissa May.
