National Program Featured This Week In Starkville
 
 
 
 
The ninth annual Deep South Stocker Conference will be held August 3-4, 2017 in Starkville, MS. This year’s program will offer a combination of seminars, demonstrations, as well as tours. The cost of this year’s conference is $100. This includes all of the seminars, demos, notebook, tour, lunch on Friday, and dinner. Feeder prices were down a few dollars last week in Mississippi auctions on average. Prices are at a much better level than in 2016 as we near the fall marketing period. The average price for 400-500 lb. steers is $16.50 above the price this time last year.

Safeguard Trigger Penalizes U.S. Beef in Japan
 
 
 
The Japanese government announced on Friday that imports of U.S. beef reached the level to trigger an automatic increase in the tariff rate on frozen U.S. beef. Japan is the top export market for U.S. beef and 2017 has seen impressive increases in the amount of beef shipped to Japan. Unfortunately, it is that impressive increase that led to higher tariffs through March 31, 2018. Tariffs will increase from the normal level of 38.5 percent to 50 percent for the next nine months.

June summary of retail meat case sales
 
 
 
Compared to a year ago:
* Beef dollar sales increased (+2.0%) and the total meat category increased (+1.8%)
* Beef pound sales increased (+2.5%) while the total meat category increased (+1.7%)
* Average price per pound for beef decreased (-0.5%) to $4.95/lb, but increased from May's $4.87/lb
* Beef retail feature activity decreased (-0.5%)
* Average beef feature price decreased (-2.3%)
