Who's YOUR Farmer?
Growing vegetables this year is proving to be a bit challenging as the weather has not been terribly cooperative so far.
But we like to focus on the positive,
and one of those positive things is our field crew! They come from different countries each year and they are incredibly dedicated to getting the job done, even if it's rainy and foggy and cold! So in order to learn a little more about some of our workers, I talked a little with Javier Zarate before the crew headed out
to plant cut flowers this morning.
Position Field Supervisor
Home Paraguay # years at Bartlett's 2
What's Your favorite part of the job:
Harvesting, but I really like all aspects of the job.
What's your favorite vegetable that we grow on the farm? Tomatoes! If they are greenhouse tomatoes, I like to slice them to eat on a sandwich. If they are field tomatoes, I make them into fresh sauce to go on pasta. I love pasta and I make a lot of sauce.
What do you enjoy about Nantucket? The people. It's great to work with people who are your friends. They aren't just co-workers.
What do you do when you are not at work?
I like to ride my bike and take pictures of beautiful areas around the island. Photography is my passion. I've learned that every sunset here is different and special. I like to go to Ladies Beach and sit on the hill to
watch the sunset and take pictures.
