Upcoming Ordinations
Paris White will be ordained as a Minister of Word and Sacrament at Grace Lutheran Church, Muscatine, Iowa on July 25, 2019, at 6:00 PM. Paris has accepted a call to serve as Pastor of Seeds of Faith Lutheran Church, Lisbon, Iowa.

Hayden Kvamme will be ordained as a Minister of Word and Sacrament at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Dubuque, Iowa, on July 26, 2019, at 5:30 PM. Hayden as accepted a call to be Pastor in Residence at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Davenport, Iowa.

Both of these people are recent graduates of Wartburg Seminary in Dubuque.

Pastors and deacons are invited to vest and process for these ordinations. The color of the day is red.
 
 
 
 
 
Synod Survey for 2020 Bishop Election
In 2020 the Southeastern Iowa Synod will elect a new bishop. The Synod Ministry Profile Committee, appointed by the Synod Council, is conducting a survey to better understand the ministry setting of this synod. The results of this survey will be used in the formation of the synod’s ministry site profile which will be made available to everyone in the synod. This profile will be used in the call process and the election of a new bishop at the 2020 Synod Assembly. There are several resources available to share this survey with your congregation.

We belong to the truth

“Let your word be ‘Yes, Yes’ or “No, No’ ” (Matthew 5:37).

When I was a girl, dinner table discussions in our family were lively. We could state our position on an issue, but then we had to be ready to back up our argument with facts. In that pre-Google time, the World Book Encyclopedia was often our source. Out came the dark blue volumes. Their very weight and color brought gravitas. One’s presentation could be critiqued, but not the facts—they were printed in the World Book Encyclopedia after all!

Those were simpler times, or maybe I was just more naïve. Now we live in the era of “truthiness” and “fake news” and “alternative facts.” One prominent attorney declared in an interview: “Truth is not truth.” I was stunned when I heard that, but even more stunned when I realized he had a point.

The Tri-Synodical Fall Conference will be held in West Des Moines, September 22-24, 2019. Deacons Jeremy Myers from Augsburg University and Chelle Huth from United Seminary will serve as keynote speakers under the theme Faith Formation as Shared Mission.

What does it mean to structure a congregation around equipping the saints for ministry in daily life? Westwood Lutheran Church in St. Louis Park, Minnesota, has done it. An immersion will provide insight into the rationale for focusing on equipping the saints for ministry in daily life, the challenges that can be expected, and the congregational revitalization that will emerge.

Pastoral Care Specialist Program 
September 12, 2019 - June 10, 2021

This two-year course is designed for clergy, parish nurses, Stephen ministers, chaplains, spiritual directors and others involved in pastoral care ministries. Meeting monthly, participants learn about areas critical to effective pastoral care and receive support, encouragement, and consultation on their work. Participants will reinforce what they already do well and integrate new knowledge and skills into their ministries.
