All the Latest from Advent
Reformation Sunday
Has it ever struck you how often in the Gospel we find Jesus welcoming a stranger, no matter their circumstances?

I don't have an exact count, but one thing is clear: Much of Jesus' ministry was with strangers. Jesus opened his arms to those who were left out, and proclaimed that those who were looked down on by society were, in fact, loved by God and had a place in God's kingdom.

2000 years ago, that was radical.

Martin Luther believed this Gospel belonged to God's children, so he translated the Bible into German. This put thousands of Bibles into the hands of people who never before were allowed to hold and read the Word of God. Could you imagine? In 1517, that was radical.

So, Jesus conquered death, and Luther reformed the Church, and our world and church today are not the same because of them. And yet, today a worldview of those who are "in" and those who are "out" -- of "us" and "them" -- still persists. People still confuse privilege with righteousness, difference with fear, and poverty or age with inferiority. Jesus, however, would be welcoming the stranger.

As church, God calls us to reflect God's love in the world. God calls us to be, like Christ, radical in welcoming the stranger and affirming God's love for every human being.

Join us at worship this Sunday, where we will celebrate the 501st anniversary of the Reformation, and affirm our commitment to welcoming the stranger.
