Why bother?
The who, what, where, and why of worship.

Join us on a series of explanations about the different elements of our worship service. Some of us gathered have been worshiping our entire lives and some of us are rather new at it, but when God is present, as God is in worship, there is always room for all of us to grow. - Pastor Danielle

Our first entry is about confession and forgiveness. In baptism, we are assured that our sins are forgiven and we are liberated to live our lives as God intended, in love and faithfulness, free from fear. But it's more complicated than that, isn't it? Read more >
It's This Sunday!
Bring your trumpets, maracas, potluck dishes, and craft supplies! Or just bring yourself. Celebration Sunday: Re-Formation is this Sunday!

This Sunday we celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Reformation through special music and a chamber orchestra in worship, an intergenerational community activity downstairs after every worship service, and an international Lutheran potluck at noon. Why is this day such a big deal?

500 years is about a quarter of the life of the Christian church. Lutheranism was founded on reforming the church to keep God's grace at the center of things, and on calling out injustices in the church and the world. In 500 years, how far have we come? How have we furthered this legacy? What's next? These are incredibly important questions.

So, what is God saying to the church today? We've already gotten 71 responses to this question on post-it notes the past few weeks in worship. This Sunday, come be part of our intergenerational community activity after every worship service, where you'll get to creatively share your perspective on this question on a quilt square that will be stitched together with the responses from everyone in our community.

Share a meal, converse, make a friend, celebrate tradition, and celebrate diversity at our international Lutheran potluck at noon. YOU are invited.
Here are 3 ways you can volunteer to help make this Celebration Sunday great!
New Art Exhibit Reception Tonight
Join us for a reception with the artist here at Advent at 7pm next Tuesday, October 24.

Abuelas: Portraits of the Invisible Grandmothers, a photography collection by Cinthya Santos Briones, focuses on undocumented Mexican immigrant women who came to New York decades ago in search of opportunity for their families. Over time they have built lives here and have become the elders of their community: the abuelas.

The collection will but up in our sanctuary from October 15 through November 6.  Read more >
Our New Sister Congregation
You've probably heard about our sister church, Pueblo de Dios, in Calderitas, El Salvador. But you might not know we've been building a relationship with the Lutheran Church in Tanzania for over seven years.

After all that time, we have just finally been partnered with a sister congregation in Tanzania. The name of our sister congregation is Kanisa ki Lutheri ki Nyabugera. We are very excited to live into our new relationship with them! A trip to Tanzania is in the works for 2019, so stay tuned.
A Friend of Advent
Lorraine Montenegro, the eldest niece of a longtime member of our congregation, Elba Cabrera, died in Puerto Rico due to complications following Hurricane Maria. Before that, she helped found a social services agency that today lives on in the Bronx. The New York Times recently published an article about her life and passing. Read it here >
