Staff Transition
Since early 2009 we have been blessed by the service of the Rev. Gloria Keiser Dovre, who has served as Assistant to the Bishop/Director for Evangelical Mission. Her leadership in this role has strengthened connections throughout the synod.

Gloria has decided to transition back to congregation-based ministry. Her hope is to serve under call on a part-time basis so that she can devote more time to the artistic aspects of her ministry, for which she is well known. She will complete her service in the Office of the Bishop at the end of January. Please join us in thanking Gloria for her service and wishing her well.

Though based in the synod, the position Gloria is leaving is an extension of ELCA Churchwide ministries and is funded through the Churchwide Organization. Bishop Burk will work closely with leaders in the Congregational and Synodical Mission unit at the Lutheran Center to determine how best to configure responsibilities and fill this important opening.

Congregational Mission Support Forms and Annual Report Covers
Each year as congregations set their ministry spending plan, the synod is also planning financial commitments on behalf of all congregations of the synod. To help with this planning, congregations are asked to please submit a mission support form at the beginning of the year. Congregations can submit the form online or in pdf format and can be accessed on the Synod's website. If you have questions please call the Synod Center for Ministry at 319-338-1273 or email Kathy Smith at smith@seiasynod.org or go to our website here.

Rostered Leaders Reports to Synod Bishop
Each year, rostered leaders are asked to complete a Rostered Leader Report to the Bishop and submit the form to the synodical bishop. For more information, and instructions click here. Forms are to be submitted by February 15, 2016.   If you have any questions, please contact Lorraine Jordan at 319.338.1273 or jordan@seiasynod.org

Confronting Racism: A Holy Yearning
ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth A. Eaton and William B. Horne II, an ELCA member from Clearwater, Fla., will continue their conversation on racism – a violation of God’s intention for humanity – in another live webcast Jan. 14, 2016, at 8 p.m. (CST). Eaton and Horne will be joined by other ELCA members who bring various perspectives on the U.S. criminal justice system. As with the previous webcast, this one will be grounded by two commitments. One is this church’s proclamation of Christ and the confidence this good news brings to set us free from the captivity of racism. The second is this church’s enduring commitment to address the complexity of racism and end discrimination. See more...

New Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Services Resource
This free resource called "My Neighbor Is Muslim," a remarkable seven part study guide for use by local congregations or other discussion groups. This resource was developed by Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota and written by professors at Luther College and Luther Seminary and for use in Minnesota. LIRS is honored to be able to launch a national version of this resource for wider use. Download "My Neighbor Is Muslim" or order free hard copies here. This resource is valuable for dialogue and engagement in welcoming refugees and new neighbors.

Racial Justice in the 21st Century-Jan. 18
Martin Luther King Jr. Day provides us the opportunity to remember how far we have come as a country, and paves the way for work and ministry in the future.
Out time together begins around the baptismal font, and takes us on the baptismal journey of daily dying and rising to new life through the process of examining old learnings and coming to new understanding and action.

This Martin Luther King Day, take time to live the spirit of the day.  Emulate King’s dedication to racial justice and community development by joining us January 18 at the Synod Center of Ministry for a day of conversation and interactive activities.
  • Consider the impact of past and current policies.
  •  Learn more about ourselves and explore how personal histories influence opinions and attitudes.
  • Work with other leaders to develop strategies that apply to your life and community. See the flyer for more information or register online.
