NCSEJ Leadership Mission to Romania and Bulgaria

October 24-31, 2019

NCSEJ’s Fall Leadership Mission traveled to Romania and Bulgaria from October 24 to October 31. In both countries, the delegation held high-level meetings with national government representatives and American and Israeli diplomats and local Jewish community leaders, and visited Jewish communal and heritage sights.

The delegates discussed the safety and security of the Jewish communities, the rise of anti-Semitism and ultra-nationalism in the region, the bilateral relationship with the United States and the relationship with the State of Israel.

The delegation was led by NCSEJ Chairman Daniel Rubin, CEO Mark Levin, and Deputy Director Lesley Weiss. Members of the delegation were Executive Committee members Harry Blumenthal and Dr. Gerald Platt and board members Dr. Vikki Deutsch, Joshua and Amelia Katzen, Alicia Levin, Eileen Prusek, and Robert and Karen Spitalnick.

Meeting with the President of Georgia 


NCSEJ President Alexander Smukler visited Georgia where he met President Salome Zourabichvili and the newly appointed Georgian Ambassador to Israel Lasha Zhvania. During the meeting, they discussed Georgian-Israeli relations and the development of the Jewish community in Georgia.
World Jewish Congress annual gala dinner

November 6 

NCSEJ Chair Daniel Rubin, President Aleksander Smukler, and CEO Mark Levin attended the World Jewish Congress annual gala dinner in New York City. WJC presented the Theodor Herzl Award to former U.S. Ambassador to U.N. Nikki Haley, and the Teddy Kollek Award to Joel Grey.
Struggle for Freedom and Democracy Day of Slovakia 

November 13

CEO Mark Levin and Deputy Director Lesley Weiss attended a state reception organized at the Slovak Embassy concluding a week of events commemorating the 30th anniversary of freedom in Slovakia.

November 14

CEO Mark Levin briefed the Jewish Federation of Detroit's Israel and Overseas Committee on the current situation of the Jewish communities in Eurasia. 

Kristallnacht Commemoration at the German Embassy 

November 17

Deputy Director Lesley Weiss attended the annual Kristallnacht commemoration at the German Embassy for Holocaust survivors and their families.  The event was hosted by Ambassador Emily Haber.
Global Israel: Israel-Austria relations event at the Austrian Embassy

November 20 

CEO Mark Levin attended this event which featured a discussion on the current state of relations between Israel and Austria.

Information briefing for Jewish organizations at the   Embassy of Poland

November 19

NCSEJ Program Associate David Pasmanik attended a meeting at the Polish Embassy with representatives of other Jewish organizations and senior Polish diplomats to discuss the latest developments in the Polish elections, the state of anti-Semitism in Poland, and the upcoming memorial event for the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.

CEO Mark Levin and Deputy Director Lesley Weiss attended the National Day of Romania at its Embassy in DC. The event was hosted by Ambassador George Cristian Maior.
